Featured Snippets: How Google Picks the Answer at the Top, and How to Write One It Lifts

A featured snippet is the box at the top of a Google results page that shows a short passage, list or table lifted from one web page, with the description placed before the link, and Google's systems alone decide which page supplies it. Featured snippets belong to AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, the discipline that covers Google's answer surfaces: featured snippets, AI Overviews, AI Mode, answer boxes and spoken answers. The sections below set out what a featured snippet is, the formats Google lifts, how Google chooses the source page, what changed when Google stopped repeating that page lower down, how to opt out, how featured snippets sit beside AI Overviews and AI Mode, how to write an answer Google lifts cleanly and how to track the result.

Google describes featured snippets as special boxes in which the format of a regular search result is reversed: the descriptive text comes first and the link to the source page follows. Google first showed featured snippets in January 2014. Its Search Help explains that they appear when Google's systems judge that people want an answer found in a short piece of a website, and a click on one takes the reader to the matching passage, scrolling automatically where the browser supports it.

Google result types compared against Google Search Central, Google Search Help and the Google blog, October 2026.

A featured snippet is a separate result format from a rich result: a rich result comes from structured data on a page, while a featured snippet is a passage of the page text that Google's systems select. Google offers no markup that places a page in a featured snippet, and its documentation for site owners describes no special code for it. A page earns rich results through valid structured data and earns featured snippets through the clarity of its text, so the two need separate work.

Featured snippets appear as a short paragraph, a numbered or bulleted list, or a table, and the format follows the question: a definition draws a paragraph, a process draws a list and a comparison draws a table. Google publishes no fixed list of featured snippet formats. The pattern below is Aemorph's reading of Google results pages in October 2026, matched against the formats Aemorph's AEO work targets.

Featured snippet formats as observed on Google results pages by Aemorph, October 2026.

Google has also tested and shipped variants. In January 2018 it described a feature that lets searchers pick a featured snippet specific to their situation, and a format that shows more than one featured snippet for related questions. These variants change week to week, so a page written answer-first serves every version of the box.

Google's systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet for each search, choosing pages by how well they answer the question and how helpful they are, so no site owner marks a page for selection. Google's documentation for site owners states that the decision sits with its systems, and Google Search Help adds that feedback from searchers helps those systems find better answers. Google also removes featured snippets that break its content policies. Aemorph's guide to how search engines work explains how Google crawls, renders, indexes and ranks pages.

Featured snippet selection, from Google Search Central and Google Search Help, October 2026.

In 2018 Google explained that, when its systems detect low-quality content prone to errors, it opts not to show a featured snippet at all, and that it sometimes shows a near-match when it lacks confidence in an exact answer. A page with a precise, well-supported answer to the exact question gives Google the confidence it looks for.

Structured data does not place a page in a featured snippet, because Google selects featured snippets from page text and describes no markup for them. Structured data earns rich results and helps Google understand entities on a page, which Aemorph's schema markup errors guide covers. The featured snippet itself comes from the words on the page.

Since 22 January 2020, a page that holds the featured snippet is not repeated as a regular listing on the first results page, because Google counts the featured snippet as one of the first-page organic listings. Google's Search Liaison announced the change, and the regular listing of that page moved to page two. Search Console Help states that a featured snippet typically occupies position 1, so a page in the box reports position 1 for that query.

SituationBefore 22 January 2020From 22 January 2020Effect on the pageWhat to watch

The January 2020 featured snippet change, from Google Search Liaison as reported and Search Console Help.

For a page that already ranks first, the box replaces the first blue link rather than adding a second one. For a page ranking lower on page one, the box lifts it to the top. Aemorph treats the box as a different presentation of the same first-page slot and judges the result on clicks per query.

A site removes a page from featured snippets with the nosnippet robots rule, keeps a passage out with the data-nosnippet attribute, and lowers the chance of a featured snippet with a small max-snippet value, though only nosnippet guarantees the result. Each control also reaches Google's AI features: nosnippet stops the content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, max-snippet limits how much of it is used, and data-nosnippet is one of the controls Google lists for limiting what AI features show from a page (Google Search Central, AI features and your website).

Aemorph's view is that almost no business benefits from opting out, because the nosnippet rule that removes a featured snippet also removes the regular snippet and the page's direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode. The exception is text that loses its meaning out of context, such as a price that changes daily or a regulated statement that needs its conditions beside it. For those passages, data-nosnippet on the specific element keeps the rest of the page eligible.

Featured snippets, AI Overviews and AI Mode all draw on the same Google index and all require a page that is indexed and eligible to show a snippet, so a page written to win a featured snippet is already in shape for Google's AI answers. Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special optimisation and no special structured data. AI Mode uses query fan-out, issuing related searches across subtopics, so a page that answers several connected questions clearly gives it more to draw on. Google reported that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users in July 2026.

GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, is the larger prize and Aemorph's focus. It earns citations and mentions inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, where buyers ask for recommendations and read a written answer. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026, and each chat reaches websites through its own search crawler, so the answer-first sentence that suits a featured snippet is also the sentence a model quotes. The GEO guide covers the chats, and the AEO guide covers Google's answer surfaces.

How Do You Write an Answer Google Lifts Cleanly?

Aemorph writes every answer in claim-first form: the question as a heading, then one bold sentence that names the subject, states the answer and needs no other sentence to make sense, then the detail. Google's systems look for the passage that answers the question, and a self-contained first sentence directly under the matching heading is the passage easiest to lift whole. Aemorph's keyword research guide covers finding the questions; the steps below cover writing the answers, and the SEO copywriting guide covers the page copy around them.

  1. Find the question as people type it. Search the query, read the featured snippet and the People also ask box, and note the exact phrasing Google shows.
  2. Use the question as the heading. A heading that matches the query tells Google and the reader where the answer starts.
  3. Answer in the first sentence. Name the subject, state the answer and keep it free of words like "it" or "this" that point back to an earlier paragraph.
  4. Match the format to the question. A paragraph for a definition, an ordered list for a process and an HTML table for a comparison.
  5. Add the detail after the answer. Examples, conditions and sources follow the first sentence, so the lifted passage stays complete and the page stays useful.
  6. Source every figure. A dated, linked source beside each number supports Google's confidence on public interest topics and gives AI chats a fact worth quoting.
  7. Keep the answer on the page as text. Answers placed in images, tabs that load on a tap or scripts that Google fails to render are invisible to the selection. Aemorph's guide to mobile SEO covers mobile-first indexing and the checks a phone layout needs.

Search Console counts a featured snippet as a position, typically position 1, and documents no separate featured snippet filter, so tracking combines Search Console query data with a live check of the results page or a rank tracker that records the box. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the overall Web search totals in Search Console, and the Search Generative AI performance report Google launched on 3 June 2026 counts how often the site's pages appeared in those features, by page, country, device and date (Google Search Central Blog, 3 June 2026). Aemorph tracks the box with Ahrefs, which records the position type for each keyword, alongside Search Console.

Earn the Answer Box, Then the Citation

A page that answers each question in its first sentence, formats lists and comparisons as real HTML, sources every figure and stays indexed and snippet-eligible gives Google a clean passage for the featured snippet and the same facts for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Aemorph's AEO work rewrites core pages into claim-first answers for your team to approve, and runs inside the LLM Influencer System, where GEO carries the same facts into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. The SEO checklist puts these answer checks in its AEO stage. The result below comes from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from:
