AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, gets your business quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers, the answers buyers read before they click anything. It structures your facts and content so those surfaces extract and cite them directly. AEO covers the answers that sit on or come from a search engine, not the AI chats. That scope matters, because AEO is often confused with GEO, and confusing the two sends your effort to the wrong surface. AI Overviews alone had over 2 billion monthly users by July 2025 (Google's 2025 AI Overviews reach figures).

What AEO Actually Optimises For
AEO makes your content extractable, so a specific fact or passage lifts cleanly into a direct answer and buyers read about your business, not merely a page that ranks. The surfaces work differently. A Google AI Overview is a generated summary shown with links to supporting pages, and Google states that a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as one of those links, with no special structured data required (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). A featured snippet shows content selected from a page, and answer boxes and voice answers vary by feature and assistant. If your business is absent from the sources behind an answer, it stays out of that answer even when your organic ranking looks strong.

Answer-ready content comes from three complementary pieces of work:
- Verified facts: an unambiguous record of what your business is and does, so the answer surface has a fact it trusts.
- Quotable passages: content written in clear passages rather than marketing copy, so a single passage answers a single question.
- Structured data: relevant markup where it helps a search engine parse your pages, as a supporting practice and not an entry requirement.
| Surface | Parent category | Where the answer appears | Answer format | What gets extracted | Discipline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | AI answer surfaces | Above Google's organic results | AI-generated summary with cited sources | Facts and passages from the pages the summary links to | AEO |
| Featured snippets | AI answer surfaces | At the top of Google's results page | A passage, list or table selected from a page | A clean, self-contained passage | AEO |
| Answer boxes | AI answer surfaces | On Google's results page | A direct answer whose format, source and attribution vary by feature | Varies by feature | AEO |
| Voice search answers | AI answer surfaces | Read aloud by a voice assistant | A spoken answer, varying by assistant | A short passage that answers the question directly | AEO |
| LLM chats (peer surface) | AI answer surfaces | Inside a chat conversation | A generated answer or shortlist | The business's facts, corroborated by independent sources | GEO |

What is answer engine optimisation?
Answer Engine Optimisation is the discipline of engineering your facts and content so Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes or voice search answers extract and quote them directly. It differs from traditional SEO because the goal is citation inside the answer itself, not a ranked link beneath it.
AEO vs GEO: The Distinction That Actually Matters
AEO and GEO both win your business AI-driven citations, but they target different surfaces, run on different mechanics and draw on different supporting practices, so telling them apart keeps your budget on the surface your buyers use. AEO targets the answers a search engine or voice assistant gives directly. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, targets the AI chats such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, where a buyer asks inside the chat without opening a search engine. SEO, search engine optimisation, sits underneath both and earns the ranked links in Google's organic results.
The practical difference shows in where the citation sits and how your buyer experiences it. An AEO citation sits on a Google results page, next to the traditional links a searcher still clicks, or inside a spoken answer. A GEO citation sits inside a conversational answer, where your business is named in the answer itself instead of in a list of links beside it.
| Discipline | Surfaces | Engines | Where the citation sits | Links shown beside it | Supporting practices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Organic results | Google's search index | A ranked link in the results list | The other ranked results | Crawlable pages, relevant content, credible backlinks |
| AEO | AI Overviews, featured snippets and answer boxes, voice search answers | Google; voice assistants | Inside Google's answer above the results, or in a spoken answer | Traditional links below the answer; none in a spoken answer | Clear facts, quotable passages and relevant structured data as a supporting practice, not an entry requirement |
| GEO | Chat answers and recommendations | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | Inside the conversational answer | Source links, where the engine shows them | Verified facts corroborated across independent sources |
AEO against its peers.
GEO is the primary discipline of the two, because a chat answer often names a shortlist with no alternative links beside it. AEO remains an important secondary surface, and the two share enough of a technical foundation that building one strengthens the other.
Pew Research Center's 2025 study found about 18% of the Google searches its US respondents ran in March 2025 produced an AI summary, with 58% of respondents running at least one such search (Pew Research Center's 2025 AI summary click study).

What is AEO and GEO?
AEO and GEO are the two disciplines that make up AI-visibility work: GEO covers citation and recommendation inside the AI chats, and AEO covers citation inside Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. Optimise for one without the other and you leave a real share of buyer research uncovered.
AEO Makes Your Business Facts Clear, Consistent and Easy to Extract
AEO makes your facts clear, consistent and easy to extract, so an answer surface has something precise to quote when your buyers search. AI keeps a map of what every business is and what it does. Each engine answers from what it has learned and retrieved about your business across many sources, and your website is only one of them. An answer surface works in four steps, a simplification that varies by surface and query:
- Identifies the pages and sources relevant to the query.
- Pulls the specific passage it needs from a source whose facts are clear and consistent.
- Links or cites the sources behind the answer, where the surface shows them.
- Leaves out the businesses its sources describe vaguely or inconsistently, a risk a high traditional ranking does not remove.
Publishing more pages does not, by itself, earn AI Overview visibility: accurate facts and clear, extractable passages come ahead of volume. Engineers use the term knowledge graph for a structured record of entities and the facts that connect them. Your verified record, the single approved set of facts about your business, keeps those facts in that verifiable form.
Getting AEO Right
Build a verified fact base first, then structure your content around it, so Google extracts your facts by design rather than by chance. Work through this checklist for each topic you want quoted:
- List the questions your buyers search. Note the exact wording buyers type or speak into Google for your category.
- Record which answer feature each question triggers. Search each one and note whether an AI Overview, a featured snippet, an answer box or no answer appears, and which pages it cites.
- Confirm each target page is indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google sets both as the conditions for a page to appear as a link in an AI Overview.
- Write one approved set of facts. Keep your business name, services, locations and figures identical on every page.
- Answer each question in one self-contained passage. Open the relevant section with a direct answer of one or two sentences, then give the detail.
- Match the format to the question. Use a numbered list for a process, a table for a comparison and a short passage for a definition, the three formats a featured snippet selects from a page.
- Add relevant structured data as support. Mark up the page where it helps Google parse it; no special structured data is required.
- Re-check the same questions every month. Note which features cite your pages and where an answer states your facts wrongly.
Every answer feature draws on pages Google indexes, so AEO starts from the SEO underneath it, the layer Aemorph reports in visits and rankings:
Case study ยท Dental, Singapore
Casa Dental grew organic traffic 94% in 10 months.
Monthly organic visits rose from 3,641 to 7,074 between March 2023 and January 2024, and keywords in Google's top three positions rose from 69 to 130. Read the Casa Dental case study
Organic search results, not AI citations. Source: Ahrefs, August 2026. How results are measured
Two mistakes undo the checklist. The first is dense marketing copy with no clean, quotable passages, which gives Google's systems little that is precise to lift.
The second is treating AEO as a content-volume problem rather than an accuracy and structure problem. A well-verified, clearly structured page presents precise passages for extraction; a large site full of loosely worded content covering the same ground makes the relevant answer harder to identify.
Is AEO worth doing if I already rank well organically?
Yes: AEO is worth doing even with strong organic rankings, because inclusion in an AI Overview is a separate visibility opportunity and a strong ranking does not secure a place in the answer. Pew Research Center's 2025 study of US users found a search results page with an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result link in only 8% of visits, versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center's 2025 AI summary click study), so in that study fewer clicks went to the organic results beneath an answer.
