For an Australian business, a featured snippet is the answer box Google places above the regular results, holding a passage, list or table taken from one page, and winning it means writing the answer so clearly that Google's systems pick your page over every other Australian source. Google handles close to nine in ten Australian searches, so the box decides which business a searcher reads first. This guide covers how featured snippets work, how Australians meet them on Google, the formats Google lifts, how it picks the source page, the 2020 change that stopped double listings, the controls that remove or limit a snippet, how the box relates to AI Overviews and AI Mode in Australia, how to write a liftable answer and how to measure the result.
What Is a Featured Snippet in Australian Google Results?
A featured snippet reverses the usual order of a Google result, putting the descriptive passage first and the link to the source page second, inside a box that sits above the blue links. Google has run featured snippets since January 2014. It shows one when its systems judge that a short piece of a website answers the search, and a click on the box takes the reader down to the matching passage on the page, where the browser supports it. Featured snippets belong to AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, the discipline that targets Google's answer surfaces: featured snippets, AI Overviews, AI Mode, answer boxes and spoken answers.
| Element on the results page | Placement | Source of the text | Lever for an Australian site | Discipline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | A box above the regular results | A passage from one indexed page, chosen by Google | Plain, direct answers in the page copy | AEO |
| Standard result | A blue link with a title and short description | The page copy or the meta description | Titles, descriptions and page copy | SEO |
| Rich result | A blue link with stars, prices or dates added | Valid structured data on the page | Schema markup | SEO |
| People also ask | A stack of related questions that expand | Short passages from indexed pages | Question headings with direct answers | AEO |
| AI Overview | A generated summary above or among the results | Google's AI systems, with supporting links | An indexed page that is eligible for a snippet | AEO |

Are featured snippets and rich snippets the same thing?
Featured snippets and rich snippets are different results: rich snippets, which Google calls rich results, are built from structured data, while a featured snippet is a passage of ordinary page text picked by Google's systems. No schema type or code places an Australian page in the answer box. Schema markup earns stars, prices and similar extras on the standard result; the featured snippet rewards the words on the page.

How Australians Meet Featured Snippets on Google
Australians search mostly on Google and almost as often on phones as on desktops, and since late 2024 the same results page also carries AI Overviews, so the answer box now competes with an AI summary for the first read. The figures below come from StatCounter's September 2026 data, Ahrefs' Australian keyword database and Google Australia's announcements.
| Measure | Figure | Period | Source | Why it matters for featured snippets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google share of search | 87.9% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Google's choice of source page reaches nearly every Australian searcher |
| Bing share of search | 9.17% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Bing is a smaller second engine with its own answer features |
| Mobile share of web traffic | 48.57% | September 2026 | StatCounter | On a phone the answer box fills much of the first screen |
| AI Overviews in Australia | Launched 29 October 2024 | October 2024 | Google Australia | An AI summary now sits on many of the same results pages |
| AI Mode in Australia | Launched 8 October 2025 | October 2025 | A conversational answer is one tap from the results | |
| Searches for "featured snippets" | 150 a month | October 2026 | Ahrefs | Australian interest in the topic, with high difficulty (72) |
| Searches for "people also ask" | 250 a month | October 2026 | Ahrefs | The related-questions box draws even more interest |

A national survey by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, published in November 2025, found that 45.6% of Australian adults had recently used a generative AI tool. Australian searchers therefore read answers in three places: the featured snippet, the AI Overview and the AI chats.

Which Answer Formats Does Google Lift?
Google lifts a featured snippet as a short paragraph, a numbered list, a bulleted list or a table, and the shape of the question sets the shape of the answer. Google keeps no published list of these formats. The table records what Aemorph sees on Australian results pages in October 2026 and the way Aemorph writes for each format.
| Shape of the Australian query | Box format | Page element Google uses | How Aemorph writes it | Sample query |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Definition or explanation | Paragraph | One or two plain sentences | A bold answer sentence straight under a question heading | what is myopia control |
| Process or set of steps | Numbered list | An ordered HTML list | Each step as a list item that opens with a verb | how to lodge a bas |
| Group of options | Bulleted list | An unordered HTML list | Items listed under a heading that names the group | types of business insurance |
| Comparison or price grid | Table | An HTML table with a header row | Text in table cells, never a picture of a table | super fund fees compared |
Featured snippet formats on Australian Google results, as observed by Aemorph, October 2026.
Google has also run interactive and multiple-snippet variants. In January 2018 it described a box that lets the searcher pick the answer for their situation, and a layout with more than one featured snippet for related questions. A page built answer-first suits every variant.

How Does Google Pick the Source Page?
Google's own systems choose the featured snippet for each search, ranking candidate passages by how well they answer the question and how helpful they are, and a site owner has no tag or request that wins the box. Searcher feedback also shapes the choice, and Google takes down snippets that break its content policies. For Australian health, finance and legal businesses, the policy on public interest topics matters most: a featured snippet on a medical or scientific topic is expected not to contradict well-established expert consensus. Aemorph's guide to how search engines work explains how Google crawls, renders, indexes and ranks pages.
| What Google weighs | Google's position | Where Google says it | Practical effect on an Australian page | What the site controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who decides | Google's systems judge whether a page makes a good featured snippet | Google Search Central | No markup or submission puts a page in the box | Only the page itself |
| How well it answers | Pages are picked on how well they answer and how helpful they are | Google Search Help | The answer belongs right under the matching heading | Page copy |
| Indexing | Only indexed pages appear in results | Google Search Central | A page blocked from crawling never supplies a snippet | Crawl access and indexing |
| Content policies | Snippets that break the policies are removed | Google Search Help | Misleading health or financial claims stay out of the box | Accurate copy |
| Public interest topics | Civic, historical, medical and scientific snippets are expected to follow expert consensus | Google Search Help | Clinical and financial claims need primary sources | Citations beside each claim |
How Google picks featured snippets, from Google Search Central and Google Search Help, October 2026.
Google explained in 2018 that it shows no featured snippet at all when its systems detect low-quality content prone to errors, and that it sometimes shows a near-match when it lacks confidence in an exact answer. An exact, sourced answer to the exact question removes that doubt.
Does schema markup win the answer box?
Schema markup does not win the answer box, because Google takes featured snippets from page text and documents no markup for them. Schema earns rich results and helps Google read the entities on a page, which Aemorph's schema markup errors guide covers. The snippet comes from the sentences a visitor reads.

What Changed When Google Stopped Repeating the Snippet Page?
From 22 January 2020, Google stopped repeating the page that holds the featured snippet among the first-page blue links, because the box itself now counts as one of the first-page organic listings. Google's Search Liaison announced the change, and the duplicate listing moved to the second page. Search Console Help adds that a featured snippet typically occupies position 1, so an Australian page in the box reports position 1 for that search.
| Case | Up to 21 January 2020 | From 22 January 2020 | What the page gets | Check in Search Console |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Page wins the box | The box plus its own blue link on page one | The box alone on page one | One first-page listing | Clicks for the query |
| Page loses the box | Its blue link stays where it ranks | Its blue link returns to its ranked place | Visibility from the standard ranking only | Position for the query |
The January 2020 deduplication, from Google Search Liaison as reported and Search Console Help.
For a page already ranked first, the box takes the place of its blue link. For a page ranked fifth, the box moves it to the top of the screen. Aemorph reads the box as the same first-page slot in a different form and judges it on clicks.

How Do You Stop or Limit a Featured Snippet on an Australian Site?
The nosnippet robots rule takes a page out of featured snippets entirely, the data-nosnippet attribute keeps one passage out, and a low max-snippet value only lowers the chance, with no guarantee. All three reach further than the answer box: nosnippet stops Google using the page as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, max-snippet caps how much of the page those features use, and Google names data-nosnippet among the controls that limit what its AI features show (Google Search Central, AI features and your website).
| Rule | Placement | Featured snippets | Standard snippets | AI Overviews and AI Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nosnippet | Robots meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header | None for the page | None for the page | Page content not used as a direct input |
| data-nosnippet | On a span, div or section element | The marked passage never appears | The marked passage never appears | The marked passage is left out of what AI features show; the rest of the page stays eligible |
| max-snippet set low | Robots meta tag | Less likely, not ruled out | Cut to that many characters | Caps how much content is used as a direct input |
| max-snippet:0 | Robots meta tag | None, the same as nosnippet | None | The same as nosnippet |
| noindex | Robots meta tag or header | Page leaves the index | Page leaves the index | Page is never a supporting link |
Snippet rules from Google Search Central's robots meta tag documentation (last updated March 2026) its featured snippet documentation (last updated December 2025) and its AI features documentation (last updated December 2025).
When does an Australian business opt out?
Aemorph's view is that an Australian business opts out only for passages that mislead when quoted alone, because nosnippet also removes the standard snippet and the page's direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Typical candidates are a daily-changing rate, a promotional price with conditions or a regulated statement that needs its disclaimer beside it. data-nosnippet on that one element keeps the rest of the page in play.

Featured Snippets, AI Overviews and AI Mode in Australia
Since AI Overviews reached Australia in October 2024 and AI Mode in October 2025, the same Australian page competes for the answer box and for a supporting link in Google's AI answers, and both need a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google states that no extra requirement, special optimisation or special structured data applies to AI Overviews or AI Mode. AI Mode breaks a question into related searches across subtopics, a technique Google calls query fan-out, so an Australian page that answers the connected questions clearly gives it more to use. Google reported AI Mode passing 1 billion monthly active users worldwide in July 2026.
The bigger prize sits outside Google. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and it is where Aemorph's work leads. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026. Each chat fetches pages through its own search crawler, so the plain answer sentence that wins a featured snippet is the same sentence a model quotes. The GEO guide covers the chats and the AEO guide covers Google's answer surfaces.
| Answer surface | Operator | In Australia since | What an Australian page needs | Discipline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | 2014, worldwide | A direct answer under the matching heading, indexed and snippet-eligible | AEO | |
| AI Overview | 29 October 2024 | Indexed and eligible to show with a snippet | AEO | |
| AI Mode | 8 October 2025 | Indexed and eligible to show with a snippet | AEO | |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI | Available to Australian users | OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt; facts in plain text | GEO |
| Claude and Perplexity | Anthropic and Perplexity | Available to Australian users | Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed; facts in plain text | GEO |

How Do You Write an Answer Google Lifts for Australian Searchers?
Aemorph writes each answer claim first: a question heading, then a bold sentence that names the subject and gives the answer on its own, then the detail, in the plain Australian English the Style Manual recommends. The Australian Government Style Manual's plain-language guidance favours everyday words, such as "buy" over "acquire" and "start" over "commence", and a short, plain answer sentence is also the passage Google lifts most cleanly. Aemorph's keyword research guide covers finding the questions Australians type. The SEO copywriting guide covers the page copy around each answer.
- Take the wording from the results page. Search the question in Australia, then note the phrasing in the current box and in People also ask.
- Put that question in a heading. The heading tells Google and the reader exactly where the answer sits.
- Give the whole answer in sentence one. Name the subject and the answer, with no "this" or "it" pointing back to an earlier paragraph.
- Choose the shape the question asks for. A paragraph for a definition, an ordered list for steps and an HTML table for a comparison.
- Keep conditions after the answer. Eligibility rules, fees and exceptions follow the first sentence, so the lifted passage stays true.
- Cite the source beside each figure. A dated, linked source supports Google's confidence on medical and financial topics and gives AI chats something precise to quote.
- Leave the answer in the HTML. Answers inside images, accordions that load on a tap or scripts that fail to render never reach the selection. Aemorph's guide to mobile SEO covers mobile-first indexing and the checks a phone layout needs.
| Part of the answer | Version Google skips | Claim-first version | Why Google lifts it | Box format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Definition | "AEO is a big topic with many angles." | "AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, is the discipline of getting a business quoted in Google's featured snippets, AI Overviews, answer boxes and spoken answers." | Subject and answer in one sentence | Paragraph |
| Steps | A paragraph with the steps folded into it | Numbered steps, each opening with a verb | Google lifts ordered lists as lists | Numbered list |
| Comparison | An image of a fee table | An HTML table with a header row | Google reads text in cells, not pixels | Table |
| Figure | "Lots of Australians use AI now." | "A November 2025 national survey found that 45.6% of Australian adults had recently used a generative AI tool." | Dated and attributed, so it is precise | Paragraph |

Tracking Featured Snippets for an Australian Site
Search Console reports a featured snippet as a position, usually position 1, and its documentation describes no featured snippet filter, so an Australian site tracks the box by pairing Search Console data with a check of the live Australian results page or a rank tracker that records the box. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode stay inside the overall Web search totals in Search Console, while the Search Generative AI performance report, launched on 3 June 2026, shows how often the site's pages appeared in those features by page, country, device and date (Google Search Central Blog, 3 June 2026). Aemorph uses Ahrefs, which labels the position type for each keyword, alongside Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
| What to check | Tool | What it returns | Reading the result | How often |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Question queries at position 1 | Search Console performance report, filtered to Australia | Queries where the page sits at the top | A question at position 1 often means the box | Monthly |
| The live Australian results page | A logged-out search from Australia | Whether the box appears and whose page fills it | Confirms the box and its format | After any position change |
| Position type per keyword | Ahrefs organic keywords, Australian database | Featured snippet, AI Overview or People also ask by keyword | Separates the box from blue-link rankings | Monthly |
| Clicks for each query | Search Console performance report | Clicks and click-through rate | Shows the effect of winning or losing the box | Monthly |
| AI Overview and AI Mode appearances | Search Console, Search Generative AI performance report | Impressions in Google's AI features by page, country, device and date | Shows where pages appear in AI answers; clicks remain inside the Web search totals | Monthly |
| Bing answers | Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing search performance for the same pages | Covers the 9.17% of searches on Bing | Monthly |

Win the Answer Box on Australian Searches
An Australian page that answers each question in its opening sentence, uses real HTML lists and tables, cites a source beside every figure and stays indexed and snippet-eligible gives Google a clean passage for the featured snippet and the same facts for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Aemorph's AEO work rewrites core pages into claim-first answers for your team to approve. It runs inside the LLM Influencer System, where GEO takes the same facts into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. The SEO checklist puts these answer checks in its AEO stage. The result below comes from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from:
