AI SEO is the practice of structuring your content and facts so Google search, Google's AI answers and AI chats such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all find, verify and cite your business, wherever your buyers research. It builds on traditional SEO, rather than replacing it, and adds two newer outcomes to the ranked link: inclusion inside a generated answer, and a chat assistant recommending your business by name. A chat answer arrives as written prose, not a ranked list of links, so being named works differently from being found. ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users by October 2025 (OpenAI's DevDay 2025 user figure).

What Makes AI SEO Different From Traditional SEO
Traditional SEO earns your page a ranked position that buyers scan and click; AI SEO earns your business a place inside the answer they read, often without clicking anything at all. The two share a technical foundation, a crawlable, well-structured, fast-loading site, and diverge sharply after that.
Traditional search ranks a page. AI Overviews and AI chats generate an answer from what each engine has learned and retrieved about your business: who you are, what you do and how credible sources describe you. Aemorph turns that account into your verified record, the single approved set of facts about your business. A page ranks first in traditional search and still sits absent from an AI Overview shown above those same results, because ranking and citation measure different things.
What is AI-powered search?
AI-powered search is any search experience where a large language model generates or assembles the answer, rather than listing ranked links. Google's AI Overviews and standalone AI chat assistants both fall under this label, and each reads your online presence differently from a traditional crawler. That is the attention AI SEO now competes for.
Adobe Analytics recorded a 1,200% rise in traffic to US retail websites from generative-AI sources in February 2025 against July 2024 (Adobe Analytics 2025 generative-AI retail traffic data), a measure of how fast AI referrals grew in US retail.
| Figure | Value | What it measures | Scope | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT weekly users | More than 800 million | People using ChatGPT each week | Global | October 2025 | OpenAI, DevDay 2025 |
| Generative-AI retail traffic growth | +1,200% | Visits to retail websites from generative-AI sources | US retail, over 1 trillion site visits analysed | February 2025 against July 2024 | Adobe Analytics, 2025 |

How AI Is Changing the Way SEO Works
AI adds two citation layers on top of the ranking layer, so your business now needs to be findable, quotable and recommendable to reach the buyers who decide inside an answer. Traditional SEO answers one question: "does this page rank?" AI SEO adds two more: "does Google's answer quote this business?" and "does the chat assistant name this business?"
Each question has its own discipline. SEO, search engine optimisation, earns your ranked place in Google's organic results. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) gets you cited inside Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) gets you cited or recommended inside the AI chats themselves. GEO is the primary discipline of the two, because a chat answer often names a shortlist with no list of links beside it; AEO extends the same work to Google's answer surfaces.
| Layer | Parent category | Surfaces | Engines | What success looks like | What it reads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Organic search | Ranked links in the organic results | Google's search index | A page-one ranking a person clicks | The crawled, indexed pages of the site |
| AEO | AI answer surfaces | AI Overviews, featured snippets and answer boxes, voice search answers | Google answer surfaces and voice assistants | The business accurately represented in an answer surface or voice response | Extractable passages and the business's verified facts |
| GEO | AI answer surfaces | Chat answers and recommendations | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | The business named correctly in the chat answer | The business's facts, corroborated by independent sources |
The three layers of AI SEO.
How has AI changed the way SEO works?
AI has added citation and recommendation as success measures alongside ranking, so you now track three outcomes, not one, and each has its own check:
- Ranks: your position in the traditional results list, where a buyer scans and clicks. Google Search Console reports it.
- Gets cited: whether Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers quote your pages. Run each priority question in Google and note which sources the answer shows.
- Gets recommended: whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your business when a buyer asks for a shortlist. Ask each chat the questions your buyers ask and note who it names and what it says about you.
The Foundation All Three Layers Share
All three layers draw on one foundation, accurate and consistent facts about your business on your own pages and in the independent sources that describe you, so one piece of work feeds your rankings, your AI answers and the leads that follow from both. AI keeps a map of what every business is and what it does. Each engine answers from what it has learned and retrieved about your business across many sources, and your website is only one of them. A buyer's question runs through four steps, a simplification that varies by engine, product mode and query:
- Draws on what the model has learned about the category, and on the sources it retrieves where web search is switched on.
- Weighs how consistently those sources describe each business.
- Names the businesses the sources describe clearly and consistently.
- Omits, or describes loosely, the businesses the sources describe vaguely or inconsistently.
Publishing more content does not, by itself, earn visibility across those surfaces: accurate facts, relevant pages and independent corroboration come ahead of volume. Engineers use the term knowledge graph for a structured record of entities and the facts that connect them. AI SEO builds and verifies your facts once, so the same account feeds traditional search, Google's AI answers and the AI chats, rather than three disconnected efforts. The SEO layer of that foundation is the one Aemorph measures in visits and rankings:

Getting AI SEO Right
AI SEO works as one foundation, not three projects on three timelines, so every piece of work you fund feeds your rankings and your AI answers at once. Start in this order:
- List your buyers' questions. Write down the questions buyers ask before they shortlist a supplier in your category, in Google and in the AI chats. Grouped by topic, these form a prompt cluster.
- Check what each surface says today. Run every question in Google and in each AI chat, and note whether your business ranks, gets cited or gets named, and whether the facts stated are right.
- Fix the technical foundation. Make your site crawlable, well structured and fast loading, so every layer has pages it reads.
- Write one approved set of facts. Record what your business is, what it does and who it serves, and use the same facts on every page.
- Answer each question in one clear passage. Put a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the page it belongs on, so Google and the AI chats lift it cleanly.
- Get independent sources to confirm your facts. Align the directories, press mentions and partner pages that describe you with your approved facts, because the engines weigh how consistently sources describe each business.
- Re-run the same questions every month. Compare rankings, citations and recommendations against your first check.
Aemorph's audits find two mistakes that break this order. The first is fixing traditional SEO, then bolting AEO and GEO on afterwards, which leaves a technically sound site with thin, unverified facts underneath the AI layers. The second is chasing AI Overview citations while ignoring the AI chats, on the assumption that Google's answer surfaces capture most AI-driven attention, when a chat answer often names a shortlist inside the answer itself.
| Mistake | What the business does | Layer left thin | Risk | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bolting AI on afterwards | Fixes traditional SEO first, then adds AEO and GEO as an afterthought | AEO and GEO | A technically sound site with thin, unverified facts underneath | Build and verify your facts once, as the base for all three layers |
| Chasing AI Overviews only | Optimises for Google's answer surfaces and ignores the AI chats | GEO | The business risks going unnamed inside the AI chats | Treat GEO as the primary layer and extend the same work to AEO |
| Running three separate projects | Gives each surface its own team and timeline | All three | Facts drift between surfaces and the engines describe the business inconsistently | Run one foundation that feeds search, AI answers and chats from a single record |
Three AI SEO mistakes and their fixes.
