Image SEO for Australian Websites: 10 Best Practices for Alt Text, File Names, Formats and Speed

Image SEO helps Australian buyers find your products and premises through Google Images, and keeps your pages quick enough that they stay to enquire. It comes down to five habits: descriptive alt text, short file names, a supported format, compression, and a sitemap entry for any image Google misses. Of these, alt text matters most. Google names it the most important attribute for image metadata and warns against filling it with keywords (Google Search Central, image SEO best practices). The ten practices below form Aemorph's practical image SEO checklist for Australian sites.

Why Does Image Optimisation Matter for Australian Websites?

Well-handled images bring Australian visitors in from Google Images and keep pages fast, and both feed enquiries and sales. Images show in image search results and next to web results, so a clearly described image opens a second path to your page. A sharp, relevant photo earns the click; an oversized file slows the page down. Google says images are often the largest contributor to overall page size, and points site owners to PageSpeed Insights to check speed.

Which Search Engines Matter for Australian Image SEO?

Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026 and Bing 9.17% (StatCounter), so Australian image work follows Google's guidance first and is checked in Bing as well. Aemorph verifies Australian client sites in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, so image and page problems surface in both. DataReportal counts 26.2 million Australian internet users as of October 2025.

Ten image SEO practices for Australian websites. Source: Google Search Central, image SEO best practices, October 2026.

1. Use original images of your Australian business

Your own photos and graphics set your pages apart from the many sites running the same stock files. Photograph your products, team and premises; chart your own data. Original visuals keep your look consistent, and they give other Australian sites something worth crediting with a link.

2. Choose the right format

Google Search supports BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF, and advises that the file extension match the real file type (Google Search Central). Photographs suit JPEG or WebP; graphics that need transparency suit PNG; logos and icons suit SVG. Use AVIF where your tools support it and the saving is worth the extra step.

3. Compress every file

Compress every image before it goes live, so each page loads faster for Australian visitors. Export at the largest size the layout shows, raise compression until the loss becomes visible, then step back one level. Build the step into your publishing tool or media library so no editor skips it.

4. Name files descriptively

Give each file a short, plain name that says what the image shows, such as the product or subject, with hyphens between words. Google reads the file name as a light clue to the subject, so a clear name helps without carrying the ranking weight. Replace camera defaults such as IMG_2041.

5. Write unique alt text

Write alt text that describes what the image shows, in a natural sentence, for people who are unable to see it. Screen readers read it aloud, and search engines use it to understand the image. Describe the specific image, give decorative images empty alt text, and never repeat one keyword string across a page. The Australian Human Rights Commission's Guidelines on equal access to digital goods and services (April 2025), issued under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and not legally binding, name WCAG as the applicable international standard for web accessibility and note that many websites lack alternative text for images. Accessibility obligations sit with your business.

General guidance, not legal advice.

6. Serve responsive sizes

Use the picture element or the srcset attribute so each device downloads a size that suits it, with a fallback in the src attribute, as Google recommends. A phone then skips the weight of a desktop hero image.

7. Add images to a sitemap

An image sitemap lists the images Google otherwise misses, including images served from a CDN on another domain. Add one when scripts load your images or galleries hide them from the crawler.

8. Add structured data

Image structured data makes an image eligible for badges and rich results in Google Images, and Google lists the image property as required for that eligibility. Use the markup that fits the content type, such as product, recipe or video, and keep every value identical to what the page shows.

9. Lazy load below the fold

Lazy loading holds back images until a visitor scrolls near them, which shortens the first load. Never lazy load the main hero image, since that delays the largest element a visitor sees. Check the rendered page to confirm lazy-loaded images still appear in the HTML Google processes.

10. Test speed after changes

Run PageSpeed Insights before and after each batch of image changes, and compare largest contentful paint and total page weight. A fix that moves neither number needs a second look at the cause.

How Do Images Relate to Your Wider On-Page Work in Australia?

Images are one pass in a full on-page review, beside titles, headings, content and speed, and together they decide how many Australian buyers find your pages and stay. Add image checks to your crawl export, so missing alt text and heavy files appear in the same report as every other issue. Follow the full sequence in the on-page SEO audit guide, pair descriptive alt text on linked images with the rules in the anchor text guide, and compare tools in the image optimisation tools guide.
