AI Search Statistics for Australia in 2027: How Buyers Now Find and Choose a Business

Australian buyers now meet an AI answer on Google before they reach a list of links, so the business named in that answer is the one that reaches their shortlist first. Google rolled out AI Overviews Australia-wide on 29 October 2024 and began rolling out AI Mode in Australia in English on 8 October 2025. Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026, and Bing held 9.17% (StatCounter). In a national survey of more than 5,500 Australian adults, ADM+S found that 45.6% had recently used a generative AI tool, and the National AI Centre found that 43% of Australian SMEs reported some AI adoption between December 2025 and February 2026.

Overall AI Search Adoption

AI answer surfaces now count their users in the hundreds of millions and the billions, so whether your business appears inside those answers decides much of who your Australian buyers put on the shortlist. Gartner's 2024 forecast has traditional search engine volume falling 25% by 2026 as people turn to AI chatbots and virtual agents (Gartner's 2024 search volume forecast). On the platform side, Google reported more than 2 billion monthly AI Overviews users across more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages as of July 2025 (Google's Q2 2025 earnings remarks on AI Overviews reach), and OpenAI reports more than 800 million weekly ChatGPT users by October 2025 (OpenAI's DevDay 2025 page on ChatGPT weekly users). One platform counts monthly users and the other counts weekly users, so the two numbers are not a like-for-like comparison, and neither gives an Australian figure.

Australia-Specific Adoption and Behaviour

Almost every Australian is online and close to half of Australian adults have recently used generative AI, so in Aemorph's view visibility inside AI answers is a present priority for your leads in Australia, not a later one. DataReportal counts 26.2 million internet users in Australia, 97.1% of the population, as of October 2025 (DataReportal Digital 2026 Australia report, as of October 2025). The ADM+S national survey of more than 5,500 adults across every Australian state and territory, published on 5 November 2025, found that 45.6% had recently used a generative AI tool, ranging from 69.1% of 18 to 34 year olds to 15.5% of 65 to 74 year olds, and that 13.6% of users paid for premium or subscription tools (ADM+S national survey on Australia's AI divide). A separate ANU study with Google, published in July 2026 from a survey of more than 3,500 adults, put the share of Australians who had used generative AI at least once at 48.6%. Among businesses, the National AI Centre's SME AI Pulse found that 43% of Australian SMEs reported some level of AI adoption from December 2025 to February 2026, down from 45% in September to November 2025 (National AI Centre AI adoption insights, December 2025 to February 2026). None of these figures measures how many Australian buyers use AI search to choose a supplier, and Aemorph's verified statistics library holds no figure that does yet.

When did Google AI Overviews and AI Mode reach Australia?

Google rolled out AI Overviews Australia-wide on 29 October 2024, a month after it began testing them locally, and began rolling out AI Mode in Australia in English on 8 October 2025. Google's Australian blog announced the first with the words "starting today, we're rolling out AI Overviews Australia wide" (Google Australia, Introducing AI Overviews in Australia), and announced AI Mode, which it calls its most powerful AI search experience yet, on 8 October 2025 (Google, AI Mode in Australia). Both features sit on the search engine with the largest share of the Australian market: Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026, against 9.17% for Bing (StatCounter search engine market share, Australia). Bing's share is small but measured, so Aemorph verifies Australian client sites in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.

AI Overview Trigger Rates by Vertical

In Pew Research Center's US study, AI summaries appeared on 18% of Google searches in March 2025, and 58% of participants encountered at least one. Aemorph's verified statistics library holds no Australian trigger rates by vertical yet, so the US rate is the nearest measured figure, and it describes US search results, not Australian ones. The shopping, education and finance surveys below show how buyers in three verticals already use AI tools; none of them samples Australians.

How do US shoppers use generative AI?

Adobe's survey of 5,000 US consumers, published on 17 March 2025, found that 39% had used generative AI for online shopping. Research (55%) and product recommendations (47%) were among the shopping tasks respondents named, and 87% of those who had shopped with AI said they were more likely to use it for larger or more complex purchases (Adobe Analytics 2025 generative-AI retail traffic report). The same Adobe release recorded generative-AI traffic to US retail sites rising 1,200% in February 2025 against July 2024, from data covering more than one trillion site visits. Both measures describe the United States; neither covers Australian shoppers, and neither tells you how Australian retail buyers behave.

How do prospective students and financial consumers use AI tools?

Half of the adults in a 2025 UPCEA and Search Influence survey said they use AI tools as they use Google, and 51% of US consumers in a 2025 J.D. Power survey had used an AI tool for financial advice or information. UPCEA and Search Influence surveyed 760 adults aged 18 to 60 in March 2025 and published the results on 13 October 2025 (UPCEA and Search Influence 2025 AI Search in Higher Education study release). The J.D. Power figure comes from its July 2025 Polaris Pulse Survey of United States consumers, reported in a document dated September 2025 (J.D. Power 2025 report on consumers and AI in financial services). The UPCEA release names no country for its sample, J.D. Power discloses no sample size, and neither survey covers Australia, so treat both as signals from outside the Australian market.

How ready are websites for AI crawlers?

Only a small share of websites name GPTBot in robots.txt, and a large share still miss basic technical health checks. HTTP Archive's Web Almanac 2025 reported that GPTBot appeared in 4.5% of desktop robots.txt files in 2025, up from 2.9% in 2024, that 48% on mobile and 56% on desktop achieved a good overall Core Web Vitals result in June 2025, and that robots.txt requests returned a success status on 84.9% of sites, while 13.3% of desktop sites returned a 404. The dataset is worldwide and gives no Australian cut. Crawler access is one technical prerequisite before an engine retrieves your website's content; by itself it decides neither whether an AI summary appears nor whether your brand is cited. A robots.txt file names GPTBot to allow it or to block it, so the 4.5% counts files that address the crawler, not sites that let it in.

Citation Frequency for SMEs

Google AI Overviews cite two of Aemorph's Australian clients for more than 200 Australian search terms each; separately, Pew's US study measured traditional-result clicks alongside AI summaries. Ahrefs organic keyword data for Australia, June 2026, shows Google AI Overviews citing Eye Concepts, an optometry business, for 226 Australian search terms with 63,430 combined monthly searches, the largest being "myopia" at 8,200, and Smile Team, an orthodontics and dental business, for 223 Australian search terms with 22,650 combined monthly searches, led by "retainer" at 5,500. These are Google AI Overview (AEO) citations, not citations inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity. Pew Research found that a Google results page carrying an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% of visits with no summary, and that users clicked a source cited inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025; 900 US adults, March 2025).

In Pew's US sample, a source cited inside an AI summary drew a click in only 1% of visits, so in Aemorph's view the mention inside the answer carries more weight than the click it sends.

Aemorph's verified statistics library holds no measure yet of how often ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity cite Australian SMEs; beyond the AI Overview counts above, the nearest measured signals are Pew's click data and Gartner's research on B2B buyers. Gartner's 2020 research found that B2B buyers spend only 17% of their time meeting potential suppliers when they are considering a purchase (Gartner's 2020 B2B buying research release), and a Gartner sales survey published on 25 June 2025 found that 61% of B2B buyers prefer an overall rep-free buying experience (Gartner's 2025 B2B rep-free buying survey). Neither Gartner figure is specific to Australia.

Aemorph's own record adds one dated observation: in a logged-out ChatGPT session on 4 August 2026, ChatGPT cited Aemorph 3 to 4 times and named it as a source for vendor and agency queries, among them "B2B lead generation agencies". It is a single recorded session, not a measure of how often ChatGPT cites any business.

How often do AI assistants get news answers wrong?

In 45% of 2,709 AI assistant answers to news questions, an EBU and BBC study published in October 2025 found at least one significant issue. The study assessed answers from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity (EBU and BBC News Integrity in AI Assistants report, 2025). It tested questions about the news, not questions about businesses, and it reports no figure for Australia.

How many businesses count as small or medium in Australia?

Australia had 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, and small businesses with fewer than 20 employees made up 97% of them. The Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 460,461 business entries, a 16.9% entry rate, and 375,331 exits, a 13.8% exit rate, in 2025-26, and New South Wales recorded a net increase of 26,057 businesses, the largest of any state or territory (ABS, Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits, July 2022 to June 2026); the ABS released those figures on 18 August 2026. The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) counts a small business as one with fewer than 20 employees and reports 2,741,087 of them actively trading on 30 June 2026, citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data (ASBFEO small business population data). The National AI Centre's 43% adoption figure above uses its own SME survey, not the ASBFEO definition, so the two do not combine into one rate.

What does the GEO benchmark study measure?

Aggarwal and colleagues tested Generative Engine Optimisation methods on a 10,000-query benchmark and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity; it builds on SEO, search engine optimisation, which earns your place in Google's and Bing's regular results, and on AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, which gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. The paper, presented at KDD 2024 and revised on 28 June 2024, also reported gains of up to 37% on Perplexity, a commercially deployed generative engine (the GEO study by Aggarwal and colleagues, KDD 2024). It is a research benchmark with no country scope, and it measures neither Aemorph's work nor any Australian business.

Where do these statistics come from?

Each external figure comes from its named publisher and is named in the section that uses it; the Australian market figures were read at their primary sources on 24 October 2026, Aemorph's client figures trace to Ahrefs data, and the citation example comes from a recorded ChatGPT session on 4 August 2026. The worldwide and United States sources were last re-read on 5 and 8 October 2026. By what each publisher does:

  • Measures search engine market share in Australia, in StatCounter Global Stats for September 2026.
  • Records Australia's internet users and penetration, in DataReportal's Digital 2026 Australia report, as of October 2025.
  • Measures generative AI use among Australian adults, in the ADM+S national survey published in November 2025 and the ANU study with Google published in July 2026.
  • Measures SME AI adoption in Australia, in the National AI Centre's SME AI Pulse for December 2025 to February 2026.
  • Counts Australian businesses, in the Australian Bureau of Statistics release of 18 August 2026 and ASBFEO's small business data.
  • Reports the Australian rollout dates of AI Overviews and AI Mode, on Google's Australian blog, and AI Overviews reach, in Google's July 2025 earnings remarks.
  • Reports ChatGPT weekly users, on OpenAI's DevDay 2025 page.
  • Forecasts traditional search engine volume, in Gartner's 2024 research; Gartner's 2020 research and its 2025 sales survey supply the B2B buyer figures.
  • Measures click behaviour and AI-summary prevalence in the United States, in Pew Research Center's 2025 study of 900 US adults, and US retail behaviour, in Adobe Analytics' 2025 release.
  • Measures Core Web Vitals results and robots.txt rules, including GPTBot, in HTTP Archive's Web Almanac 2025.

UPCEA and Search Influence, the EBU and the BBC, J.D. Power, and Aggarwal and colleagues supply the student, news-answer, financial-consumer and GEO benchmark figures, each read at the primary source on 8 October 2026. The client figures use Ahrefs organic traffic data from August 2026 and Ahrefs organic keyword data for Australia from June 2026. The worldwide figures, without the Australian market data, sit on Aemorph's global AI search statistics page.

How often is this page updated?

Aemorph dates every figure on this page and checks it against its source. For each statistic, Aemorph:

  • Replaces the figure when its publisher releases a newer number.
  • Dates the statistic to the period its source measures.
  • Retires the figure once it no longer has a current primary source, rather than leaving it to age.

Turn These Numbers Into Visibility in Australia

Find out where your business stands in the AI answers your Australian buyers read, so you know which visibility gaps sit between you and your next leads. Every engagement starts with a free 30 to 60 minute strategic conversation, in which Aemorph learns about your business, explains what it does and shares relevant case studies. The Hallucination Diagnostic then tests a sample of 10 to 20 showstopper questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, depending on the size and complexity of your business, with the report in 5 business days, presented on a call. The Diagnostic is included in the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1), a 30-day showstopper-answer sprint for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, in the AEO-GEO Audit and in the ESAG audit, the enterprise SEO, AEO and GEO audit, so if you buy one of those three, you never pay for it separately. Bought on its own, the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1) is a standalone start open to any business, at any size; on the enterprise route it runs inside Attain or Apex after the audit and the Influencer Blueprint. Aemorph is headquartered in Singapore and has no office in Australia; it serves Australian clients remotely, in Australian business hours, with a 24-hour response to all communication.
