AEO and GEO pay off for an Australian business when its buyers already research on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity and read the Google AI Overviews that have appeared across Australia since 29 October 2024. AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and GEO leads the work. This guide sets out organic traffic growth from four Australian clients, the Google AI Overview citations two of them hold, and a formula that turns your own fee and sales figures into a return. ChatGPT cited Aemorph 3 to 4 times and named it as a source in a logged-out session on 4 August 2026.

The Sceptical Case for Australian Businesses
AEO and GEO spend does not pay off for every Australian business, and the two clearest exceptions show up before anyone calculates a return. Citation work earns its keep where buyers already use AI answers. Where that habit is not yet established in your category, your SEO and content foundations come first. A business with thin service pages and unconfirmed credentials gives an AI model very little to describe correctly, whatever the budget. Both disciplines sit on top of SEO, search engine optimisation, which earns your place in the regular results on Google and Bing.
Two questions decide where an Australian business starts:
- Do your buyers already research suppliers on an AI platform?
- Are your own published facts (services, credentials, licences, locations) complete enough to verify?
Answer yes to both and the work starts with citations. If either one is still being built, the programme opens with the foundation work.
ROI Data from Real Australian Campaigns
The business case for AEO and GEO in Australia weighs your quoted fee against the cost of being absent from the answers your buyers read, and Aemorph's Australian client records show organic growth compounding over years, not in one fast month. The fee is half of the comparison. The other half is what it costs to stay out of AI answers while a competitor, described correctly, appears in them. Each engine answers from what it has learned and retrieved about a business across many sources, and your website is one of those sources, not the only one. An engine that knows little about your business is less likely to name it when a buyer asks for a recommendation, and that is a different loss from slipping one ranking position.
In Pew Research Center's March 2025 study of 900 US adults, a Google results page carrying an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% without one. That is US data. It draws no conclusion about Australian click rates.
| Search page | What the user clicked | Share of visits | Sample | Source |

Case study · Business insurance broker platform, Sydney
BizCover grew organic traffic 4,820% across nearly eight years.
BizCover, a business insurance broker platform with its office in Sydney, went from 894 to 43,989 monthly organic visits between December 2015 and September 2023. Its annualised rate is 65% a year, and held across nearly eight years that rate compounds to 4,820%. Read the BizCover case study
Organic search results, not AI citations. Source: Ahrefs, August 2026. How results are measured
BizCover's result reflects how long the engagement ran: nearly eight years, the longest in Aemorph's published case studies, with the largest absolute gain on record. Plan AEO and GEO as a multi-year position for your Australian business, not a monthly experiment. These results come from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from; they are organic SEO results.
Case study · Optometry, Australia
Google AI Overviews cite Eye Concepts for 226 Australian search terms.
Those 226 terms carry 63,430 combined monthly searches in Australia, led by "myopia" (8,200), "eye twitching" (5,100) and "eye infection" (4,300). Over a 56-month SEO engagement, Eye Concepts went from 2,008 to 12,483 monthly organic visits, 522% in total and 48% a year. Read the Eye Concepts case study

A citation in an AI Overview is the AEO half of the return: it puts the business inside the answer on Australian Google searches. Smile Team, a multi-practice orthodontics provider, holds AI Overview citations for 223 Australian search terms with 22,650 combined monthly searches, led by "retainer" (5,500), on the same Ahrefs data.
Across the four Australian clients, BizCover's engagement produced the largest gain, from 894 to 43,989 monthly organic visits.
| Client | Market | Ahrefs-estimated monthly organic visits before | After | Period | Change | Annualised rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remarkable Furniture | Australia, outdoor furniture retail | 3,883 | 12,172 | 13 months (Sep 2019 to Oct 2020) | 213% | 187% a year |
| Smile Team | Australia, orthodontics | 2,506 | 5,629 | 28 months (Oct 2021 to Feb 2024) | 125% | 41% a year |
| Eye Concepts | Australia, optometry | 2,008 | 12,483 | 56 months (Jun 2019 to Feb 2024) | 522% | 48% a year |

Organic search results, not AI citations. Source: Ahrefs, August 2026. How results are measured
The annualised rates in this table run from 41% to 187% a year. The shortest engagement grew fastest per year and the longest grew furthest in total, so read a 13-month result and an eight-year result as different kinds of evidence.
Gartner forecast in a press release dated 19 February 2024 that traditional search engine volume drops 25% by 2026, with search marketing losing share to AI chatbots and other virtual agents. It is a global forecast, not a measured Australian figure. Adobe Analytics measured that traffic to US retail sites from generative-AI sources rose 1,200% in February 2025 against July 2024, across more than a trillion visits to US retail sites; that is US data and says nothing about Australian retail on its own. For an Australian business that relies on classic search traffic alone, both signals point to the same risk: being absent from AI answers.
Aemorph's client figures measure organic traffic, so your own quoted fee is the variable in your return calculation. On a fee-only basis, return on investment is the gross profit attributable to the work, minus the total quoted fee, divided by the total quoted fee. The total quoted fee is the fee in your quote, counted across the whole quoted term. The fee-only break-even point is the total quoted fee divided by the gross profit one new customer brings. A full-project calculation adds every other incremental cost, such as your own team's production and implementation time, and keeps the same measurement period. Count only additional customers: a channel label in your records supports attribution but does not prove a customer is new to you, so compare against your baseline from before the work began.
| Input | Where the figure comes from | How it enters the calculation | What to compare it against | What Aemorph's evidence covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total quoted fee | The written quote from Aemorph or any other agency, counted across the quoted term; Aemorph quotes Australian clients in Australian dollars | Subtracted from the attributable gross profit, then used as the divisor | The same budget spent in a channel you already pay for, such as Google Ads | Aemorph quotes each engagement after the strategic conversation; starting points are on the pricing page |
| Gross profit per new customer | Your own sales records | Divides the total quoted fee to give the break-even number of customers | What it costs you to win one customer through your current channels | No Aemorph figure; the input is yours |
| Customers attributable to the work | Enquiry and sales records that name organic search (Google or Bing) or an AI assistant as the source, measured against your pre-engagement baseline and counted once across channels | Multiplied by gross profit per customer to give the attributable gross profit | The break-even number of customers | Organic traffic growth across four Australian clients, which measures visits, not attributed customers |
| Time to first effect | The engagement's own timeline | Sets how much of the quoted term passes before the return starts | The length of the quoted term | Visibility in AI answers typically begins after month 3 |
Fee-only return-on-investment inputs.
How much does AEO and GEO cost in Australia?
Aemorph quotes each Australian AEO and GEO engagement in Australian dollars after a free strategic conversation, and that quote becomes the total quoted fee in your calculation. The published starting points are:
| Offer | Price |

| Audits | From A$1,100 one-time |
| Sprints | From A$5,500 per website |
| Influencer Blueprint (SEO strategy and roadmap) | From A$16,500 one-time |

Smaller monthly packages are available by application only, against strict criteria; details are on the pricing page. Monthly packages are priced per market.
The Australian AEO and GEO cost guide sets these starting points beside dated Australian market prices and pricing models.
What's the ROI of AEO and GEO for an Australian business?
Aemorph holds no measured financial return figure for AEO or GEO; its Australian benchmarks are organic traffic growth from SEO and Google AI Overview citations, and the formula above turns your own figures into a return. Organic traffic growth, AI citations and attributable financial return are three different measures, and none stands in for another. The longest Australian record, with the client's sector and engagement length, is on the BizCover case study.
Australian Search and AI Use in Figures
Google carries most Australian search and has shown AI Overviews nationwide since October 2024, and close to half of Australian adults have recently used a generative AI tool, so these figures size the audience any AEO and GEO return depends on. Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026 and Bing 9.17% (StatCounter). Google began rolling out AI Mode in Australia, in English, on 8 October 2025. The National AI Centre reported that 43% of Australian SMEs had some AI adoption between December 2025 and February 2026. These figures describe search and AI use; they do not predict the return on any single engagement.
| Measure | Figure | Market and date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google search engine market share | 87.9% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing search engine market share | 9.17% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Google AI Overviews | Rolled out Australia-wide | Australia, 29 October 2024 | Google Australia |
| Google AI Mode | Rollout began, in English | Australia, 8 October 2025 | Google Australia |
| Adults who recently used a generative AI tool | 45.6% | Australia, survey of more than 5,500 adults, published November 2025 | ADM+S |
| SMEs reporting some AI adoption | 43% | Australia, December 2025 to February 2026 | National AI Centre |

Because Bing holds close to a tenth of Australian search engine market share, Aemorph verifies Australian client sites in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console, and tracks both in the monthly report.
When AEO and GEO Pays Off in Australia
AEO and GEO spend fits three Australian business profiles best: an SME with a content foundation already in place, a category leader defending its position, and an exporter competing for buyers in overseas markets. Each one points the same work at its own sales goal:
- SMEs with service pages, credentials and a location record already published, whose facts need verifying and completing rather than creating from nothing, so the work starts ahead.
- Category leaders facing newer competitors, which state the attributes buyers ask about before a rival does.
- Exporters without an established referral network in their overseas markets, which put more weight on how AI answers describe them to buyers who have never met them.
Gartner research (2020) found that B2B buyers typically spend only 17% of their time meeting with potential suppliers when they are considering a purchase, and a Gartner sales survey published 25 June 2025 found that 61% of B2B buyers prefer an overall rep-free buying experience. Both are global studies and neither measures AI answers. In Aemorph's working model, the less time a buyer spends with suppliers, the more weight the answers read beforehand carry.
When It Doesn't Pay Off in Australia
AEO and GEO spend does not make sense for an Australian business without the budget to sustain the work, one expecting an overnight result, or one unwilling to correct the facts an AI model already has wrong. Each case fails to return for its own reason:
- Businesses with one month of budget. Coverage builds as topic clusters grow over months, and the terms are set out in your quote. One month of budget fits the Hallucination Diagnostic, which tests a sample of 10 to 20 showstopper questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity and delivers its report in 5 business days, presented on a call. It also fits the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1), a 30-day showstopper-answer sprint for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, bought on its own.
- Businesses expecting AI recommendations within days of signing. Visibility in AI answers typically begins after month 3, once entity coverage and authority are established.
- Businesses that resist correcting what an AI model already has wrong, and keep publishing a service list, credential or location that differs between their own website and Australian directories. That leaves an AI model with conflicting facts to draw on, whatever the budget.
How long does AEO and GEO take to show results in Australia?
Your first ranking movements show within 45 days of publishing. That is an SEO ranking milestone, and the 45 days count from publication, not from the day your engagement starts. AI answers run on their own clock: visibility in AI answers typically begins after month 3.
