AI Overview Competitor Displacement in Australia: Why Google Quotes Your Competitor Instead of You

For an Australian business, AI Overview competitor displacement means Google's AI Overview answers your buyer's question with a competitor's page, so the buyer meets their name before yours. It happens even when your own page ranks on page one in Australia. Google builds each overview from passages that answer the parts of a question, not from rankings alone. Aemorph's AEO service rebuilds those answers on your ranking pages. Eye Concepts, a Sydney eyewear retailer, is an Aemorph client. In June 2026, Ahrefs recorded Google AI Overviews citing it for 226 Australian search terms.

AI Overview Competitor Displacement Shows Up Even When You Rank

Competitor displacement in AI Overviews puts a rival's name or link inside Google's answer to a question your page already ranks for in Australia, so their business reaches the buyer first and your result slips below the fold. Ranking and being quoted are separate outcomes. Ahrefs found that 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, 2026), which leaves 62% of cited pages outside that query's top 10.

Symptoms, likely causes and fixes for AI Overview competitor displacement in Australian search.

Why is my competitor in the AI Overview and not me?

Google cites the page whose passage answers the question, or one part of it, most directly, so an Australian competitor with a clearer answer takes the citation even when your page sits higher. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (Google Search Central, checked October 2026). Each sub-question is a separate chance for a competitor to be quoted.

Google Builds AI Overviews From Passages, Not Rankings Alone

Google picks AI Overview sources from indexed pages whose passages answer the question and its sub-questions, so the clearest, most complete answer wins the citation an Australian ranking alone does not secure. Google draws on your pages, your Google Business Profile and what other sites say about you.

Google's documentation sets the entry rule plainly: a page is eligible as a supporting link when it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements. Eligibility is the floor. Selection then depends on whether a passage on your page answers the fanned-out questions better than the alternatives. Three gaps hand the citation to a competitor:

  • Buried answers. The answer sits deep in a paragraph, after context, instead of in the first sentence under a matching heading.
  • Missing sub-questions. Your page covers the main question and skips the price, timeline or comparison questions Google also searches.
  • Unconfirmed facts. Your claims appear only on your own site, while the competitor's facts repeat across Australian directories, listings and articles.

Does ranking first get you into the AI Overview?

A first-place ranking makes your page eligible and visible in Australian results, but the citation goes to the passage: a lower-ranked page with a clearer answer takes the link. Rankings are the foundation; the answer passage decides the citation.

Australian Buyers Meet AI Overviews Across Google Search in Australia

Australian buyers search mainly on Google, which has shown AI Overviews across Australia since October 2024, and Bing holds close to a tenth of searches, so a displaced overview reaches the bulk of your Australian search audience. Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026 and Bing 9.17% (StatCounter).

Google added AI Mode in Australia in October 2025, which gives a competitor's passage a second AI surface on the same results page. For Australian clients, Aemorph checks Google clicks and positions in Google Search Console and tracks Bing performance separately in Bing Webmaster Tools.

AEO Puts an Answer Google Quotes on Your Page

AEO, answer engine optimisation, wins back a displaced AI Overview by rebuilding the answer on your page, so Google finds a passage worth quoting for each question your buyers ask. It sits on SEO, search engine optimisation, which earns the ranking that makes your page eligible. It runs alongside GEO, generative engine optimisation, which gets you cited inside the AI chats. Aemorph runs the fix as a sequence:

  1. Groups the question and the sub-questions Google fans out to, taken from the overviews and People Also Ask results showing for your query, into a prompt cluster.
  2. Covers the attributes the AI Overview answer already names for each question, then states the same attributes on your page in more depth and in fewer words.
  3. Answers each question in one bold, plain sentence directly under a heading phrased as the buyer asks it.
  4. Structures comparisons, prices and steps as tables and numbered lists that state each fact once.
  5. Names your business inside the answering sentence, so a quoted passage carries your name as well as your link.
  6. Confirms your core facts on your Google Business Profile and on outside sources, so Google finds them stated the same way more than once.
  7. Checks that each page is indexed and snippet-eligible, with Aemorph's specifications applied by your team or vendor and verified by Aemorph.
  8. Tracks overview citations across the whole cluster, not one keyword, in Aemorph's monthly reporting.

Case study · Eyewear and eye care, Australia

Google AI Overviews cite Eye Concepts for 226 Australian search terms.

Those terms carry 63,430 combined monthly searches, led by "myopia" at 8,200. Read the Eye Concepts case study

Case study · Multi-practice orthodontics, Australia

Google AI Overviews cite Smile Team for 223 Australian search terms.

Those terms carry 22,650 combined monthly searches, led by "retainer" at 5,500.

These results come from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from; they are Google AI Overview citations in Australian search, not citations inside the AI chats.

How long does it take to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google decides when a page enters an AI Overview in Australia, so Aemorph tracks overview citations by cluster rather than promising a date. Rankings follow a separate clock: your first ranking movements show within 45 days of publishing. That 45-day line is an SEO ranking milestone, and AI Overview citations are measured separately, from the date the rebuilt page goes live.

How do you check whether a page is eligible for AI Overviews?

A page qualifies for AI Overviews when Google has indexed it and is allowed to show a snippet from it, and Search Console's URL Inspection tool confirms that page by page. A nosnippet rule, a noindex tag or a blocked page removes that eligibility before any answer is judged.

Displacement Costs You Clicks Before the Buyer Scrolls

A displaced AI Overview costs an Australian business clicks on queries it already ranks for, because buyers read the competitor's quoted answer first and fewer of them reach the organic results. In a July 2025 study of US adults, which draws no conclusion about Australian searchers, Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Ahrefs measured a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview is present (Ahrefs, February 2026), across 300,000 keywords.

Risk level and recheck point for each displacement state in Australian search, as illustrative scenarios.

Aemorph sets no fixed recheck interval. Your first working day with Aemorph is the first check date, and pages are then assigned for update in order of importance: bottom-of-funnel, middle-of-funnel, then top-of-funnel. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type, so a drop in clicks at stable positions is the first signal to check.

Does an AI Overview reduce clicks to my website?

An AI Overview cuts clicks to the organic results beneath it, and Ahrefs measured the steepest fall on the top-ranking page. Being the cited source inside the overview keeps your name in front of the buyer at the point where the click decision happens.

AEO Claims Stay Inside What Your Business Proves

Each passage written to win an AI Overview for an Australian business states only facts the business supports, so the claim Google quotes is one you stand behind. A quoted claim travels further than the page it came from. Aemorph writes core-fact sentences for your approval and publishes only what your nominated point of contact signs off, including any comparison with a named competitor.

Copying a competitor's cited page adds nothing Google has not already seen. Google's guidance for AI features points to the same foundation as Search overall: helpful, reliable, people-first content that follows its spam policies.

Is it safe to compare your business with a named competitor?

A comparison stays on safe ground when each claim about the competitor matches what the competitor publishes, carries a date and is stated neutrally. Under the Australian Consumer Law, a business needs evidence for the claims it makes, and the specifics are a question for a qualified Australian legal adviser. Aemorph's guide to the ACCC and the Australian Consumer Law covers comparative claims in marketing.
