# AI Search Statistics for 2027: How Buyers Worldwide Find and Choose Businesses

**Google held 89.94% of search engine market share worldwide in September 2026 (StatCounter), and AI answers now sit inside that search engine and beside it: Google's AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users and ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly active users.** Your buyers meet an AI summary of your category before they meet a list of links. In Pew Research Center's US study, a results page carrying an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one. Every external figure on this page was checked at its source on 24 October 2026.

**This table gathers the worldwide and multi-market figures behind AI search in one place: who holds search, how many people use AI answers, and how rarely a buyer still clicks through.** Every row names its market, so a United States measure reads as a United States measure and a worldwide figure as a worldwide one.

## Overall AI Search Adoption

**AI answers reach well over a billion people a month through Google and through the AI chats, so your buyers read an AI summary of your category whether or not they ever open a chatbot.** Google reported that its AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages ([Google's Q2 2025 earnings remarks](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/alphabet-earnings-q2-2025/)), and a year later that AI Mode, expanded globally in October 2025, had passed 1 billion monthly active users, with the Gemini app at 950 million ([Google's Q2 2026 earnings remarks](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/alphabet-earnings-q2-2026/)). OpenAI put ChatGPT at more than 900 million weekly active users on 27 February 2026 ([OpenAI, "Scaling AI for everyone"](https://openai.com/index/scaling-ai-for-everyone/)), up from the more than 800 million weekly users shown on its DevDay 2025 page.

Google counts monthly users and OpenAI counts weekly users, so the figures do not compare directly, and one person who uses three of these products counts once in each. Gartner's February 2024 forecast set the fall in traditional search engine volume at 25% by 2026, as people move to AI chatbots and other virtual agents; it is a forecast, and the market share figures below measure each engine's share, not total search volume.

| AI surface | Users | How the platform counts them | Type | Publisher and date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google AI Overviews | Over 2 billion | Monthly users, as of July 2025 | Reported by the platform | Google, 23 Jul 2025 |
| Google AI Mode | More than 1 billion | Monthly active users, as of July 2026 | Reported by the platform | Google, 22 Jul 2026 |
| Gemini app | 950 million | Monthly active users, as of July 2026 | Reported by the platform | Google, 22 Jul 2026 |
| ChatGPT | More than 900 million | Weekly active users, February 2026 | Reported by the platform | OpenAI, 27 Feb 2026 |
| ChatGPT, earlier figure | More than 800 million | Weekly users, October 2025 | Reported by the platform | OpenAI, DevDay 2025 page |

### Which search engines hold the worldwide market?

**Google held 89.94% of search engine market share worldwide in September 2026 (StatCounter), with Bing second at 5.29%.** Yahoo! followed at 1.36%, Yandex at 1.3%, DuckDuckGo at 0.74% and Baidu at 0.44% ([StatCounter, search engine market share worldwide](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share)). These six engines are the ones StatCounter lists for the month; the measure is search engine share, not a count of searches and not a measure of AI chat use. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode both run inside Google, the engine with the largest share in StatCounter's data.

| Search engine | Share of search engine market | Market | Month | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google | 89.94% | Worldwide | September 2026 | StatCounter Global Stats |

### How many internet users still use a search engine?

**Most online adults still use a search engine each month: 80.3% told GWI they had used one, such as Google or Yahoo!, within the past month, the lowest share GWI has recorded for that question (DataReportal, as of October 2025).** DataReportal counts 6.04 billion internet users worldwide, 73.2% of the world's population, as of October 2025 ([DataReportal, Digital 2026 Global Overview Report](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-global-overview-report)). In the same report, as of October 2025, Kepios estimates that more than 1 billion people use LLMs and GenAI platforms each month, an extrapolation from several sources rather than a count published by any one platform.

## Adoption and Behaviour Across Markets

**AI assistants now answer in many languages and countries, and a study the EBU describes as the largest of its kind found accuracy problems across the countries and languages it covered, so the facts AI states about your business need checking wherever your buyers ask.** The EBU and the BBC coordinated 22 public service media organisations in 18 countries, working in 14 languages, which assessed more than 3,000 responses from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity and found at least one significant issue in 45% of all AI answers ([EBU, 22 October 2025](https://www.ebu.ch/news/2025/10/ai-s-systemic-distortion-of-news-is-consistent-across-languages-and-territories-international-study-by-public-service-broadcaste)). The study tested news questions, not questions about businesses, so it measures how often assistants misstate the news, not how often they misstate a company.

OpenAI's own adoption data points the same way: ChatGPT adoption has grown sharply across every continent since July 2023, the fastest relative growth has come in Africa and Asia, and users who mainly write in a language other than English now make up over half of its active users ([OpenAI, "How ChatGPT adoption has expanded", 30 June 2026](https://openai.com/index/how-chatgpt-adoption-has-expanded/)). OpenAI defines an active user there as one who sent a message in the previous seven days.

## AI Overview Trigger Rates by Vertical

**In Pew Research Center's US study, AI summaries appeared on 18% of Google searches in March 2025, and 58% of participants encountered at least one.** No worldwide trigger rate by vertical has passed primary-source checking for this page, so this United States rate stands as the closest measured figure; it describes United States users only and draws no conclusion about any other market. The shopping, education and website surveys below show how three groups already use AI tools or prepare for them.

| Measure | Figure | Market | Period | Publisher |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Share of Google searches that generated an AI summary | 18% | United States | March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |
| Users with at least one search that generated an AI summary | 58% | United States | March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |

### How do US shoppers use generative AI?

**39% of the 5,000 United States consumers in Adobe's 2025 survey had used generative AI for online shopping.** Research led the shopping tasks they named, at 55%, ahead of product recommendations at 47%, and 87% of the shoppers who had used it said they were more likely to turn to AI for larger or more complex purchases ([Adobe Analytics, 17 March 2025](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/03/17/adobe-analytics-traffic-to-us-retail-websites-from-generative-ai-sources-jumps-1200-percent)). Adobe's analytics in the same release recorded traffic from generative AI sources to United States retail sites rising 1,200% in February 2025 against July 2024, across more than 1 trillion visits. Both measures describe the United States only.

| Measure | Figure | Base | Market | Publisher and date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Have used generative AI for online shopping | 39% | 5,000 US consumers surveyed | United States | Adobe, 17 Mar 2025 |
| Use it for research | 55% | Respondents, as Adobe reports them | United States | Adobe, 17 Mar 2025 |
| Use it for product recommendations | 47% | Respondents, as Adobe reports them | United States | Adobe, 17 Mar 2025 |
| More likely to use AI for larger or more complex purchases | 87% | Respondents who had used AI for shopping | United States | Adobe, 17 Mar 2025 |
| Change in traffic from generative AI sources to retail sites | Up 1,200%, February 2025 against July 2024 | More than 1 trillion visits | United States | Adobe Analytics, 17 Mar 2025 |

### How do prospective students use AI tools?

**Half of the 760 adults in UPCEA and Search Influence's 2025 survey use AI tools the way they use Google, and 79% read Google's AI-generated overviews.** The survey ran in March 2025 among adults aged 18 to 60 and was released on 13 October 2025 ([UPCEA and Search Influence, 13 October 2025](https://upcea.edu/ai-tools-are-driving-prospective-student-decisions-upcea-and-search-influence-research-shows/)). Search engines still led at 84%, ahead of YouTube at 61%, and 56% said they were more likely to trust an institution cited in an AI overview, while 77% named university websites as the most reliable source. The release names no country for its sample.

| Measure | Figure | Sample | Market | Publisher and date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Use search engines | 84% | 760 adults aged 18 to 60, March 2025 | Not stated in the release | UPCEA and Search Influence, 13 Oct 2025 |
| Use YouTube | 61% | 760 adults aged 18 to 60, March 2025 | Not stated in the release | UPCEA and Search Influence, 13 Oct 2025 |

### How ready are websites for AI crawlers and llms.txt?

**Few websites address AI crawlers directly yet: GPTBot appeared in 4.5% of desktop robots.txt files in 2025, up from 2.9% in 2024, and only 2.13% of desktop sites had a valid llms.txt file.** HTTP Archive's Web Almanac 2025 also found 48% on mobile and 56% on desktop achieved a good overall Core Web Vitals result in June 2025, and that robots.txt requests returned a success status on 84.9% of sites, while 13.3% of desktop sites returned a 404 ([HTTP Archive, Web Almanac 2025, SEO chapter](https://almanac.httparchive.org/en/2025/seo)). The chapter identified 324,184 valid llms.txt files across the mobile sites it analysed. A robots.txt line that names GPTBot either allows or blocks it, so the 4.5% counts files that address the crawler, not sites that admit it, and crawler access on its own decides neither whether an AI answer appears nor whether your brand is cited.

| Measure | Figure | Dataset | Year | Publisher |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Desktop robots.txt files naming GPTBot | 4.5% (2.9% in 2024) | HTTP Archive | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |
| Sites with a valid llms.txt file | 2.13% desktop, 2.10% mobile | HTTP Archive | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |
| Valid llms.txt files found | 324,184 | Mobile sites analysed | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |
| Good overall Core Web Vitals result | 48% mobile, 56% desktop | HTTP Archive, June 2025 | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |
| robots.txt request returned a success status | 84.9% | Desktop and mobile sites | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |
| robots.txt request returned a 404 | 13.3% of desktop sites | Desktop sites | 2025 | Web Almanac 2025 |

## Citation Frequency for SMEs

**Visits to a Google results page with an AI summary had lower traditional-result click rates in Pew Research Center's US study.** In Pew Research Center's study of 900 United States adults, a Google results page with an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% of visits without a summary, and users clicked a source cited inside the summary in just 1% of visits ([Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/)). The study covers the United States in March 2025; it draws no conclusion about other markets.

| Results page | Click recorded | Share of visits | Sample | Publisher |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Without an AI summary | Traditional result link | 15% | 900 US adults, March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |
| With an AI summary | Traditional result link | 8% | 900 US adults, March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |
| With an AI summary | Source cited inside the summary | 1% | 900 US adults, March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |

*Source: Pew Research Center, "Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results", 22 July 2025.*

No measure of how often AI answers cite small and medium businesses worldwide has passed primary-source checking for this page. Aemorph's own record adds one dated observation: ChatGPT cited Aemorph 3 to 4 times and named it as a source in a logged-out session on 4 August 2026, for vendor and agency queries including "B2B lead generation agencies". It is one session, not a measured citation rate.

### How do B2B buyers use AI in a purchase?

**In Gartner's survey of 646 B2B buyers, 67% said they prefer a rep-free experience and 45% reported using AI during a recent purchase.** Gartner ran the survey from August to September 2025 and published it on 9 March 2026 ([Gartner, 9 March 2026](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2026-03-09-gartner-sales-survey-finds-67-percent-of-b2b-buyers-prefer-a-rep-free-experience)).

### What does the GEO benchmark study measure?

**Aggarwal and colleagues built GEO-bench, a large-scale benchmark of diverse user queries across multiple domains, and reported that Generative Engine Optimisation methods boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.** [GEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), generative engine optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity; [AEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation), answer engine optimisation, gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers; and both rest on [SEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), which earns your place in Google's regular results. The paper's latest version is dated 28 June 2024 ([arXiv:2311.09735](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735)). The abstract also reports that the methods' effect varies by domain. It is a research benchmark with no country scope, and it measures neither Aemorph's work nor any client's.

### Where do these statistics come from?

**Each external figure comes from the publisher named beside it and was re-read at that publisher's own page on 24 October 2026; Aemorph's client figures trace to Ahrefs organic data from August 2026.** The publishers each do one job on this page:

- **Measures** worldwide search engine market share: StatCounter Global Stats, September 2026.
- **Reports** AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini app users: Google's earnings remarks of July 2025 and July 2026.
- **Reports** ChatGPT weekly users and language mix: OpenAI's pages of October 2025, February 2026 and June 2026.
- **Records** internet users, search engine use and the LLM user estimate: DataReportal's Digital 2026 Global Overview Report, data as of October 2025, with GWI and Kepios figures.
- **Forecasts** traditional search engine volume: Gartner, February 2024; Gartner's March 2026 survey supplies the B2B buyer figures.
- **Measures** click behaviour and AI-summary prevalence in the United States: Pew Research Center, July 2025.
- **Measures** generative AI shopping and retail traffic in the United States: Adobe, March 2025.
- **Assesses** AI assistants' news answers across 18 countries: the EBU and the BBC, October 2025.
- **Surveys** prospective students: UPCEA and Search Influence, October 2025.
- **Measures** robots.txt rules, llms.txt files and Core Web Vitals: HTTP Archive, Web Almanac 2025.
- **Tests** GEO methods on a benchmark: Aggarwal and colleagues, arXiv, June 2024.

### How often is this page updated?

**Aemorph dates every figure on this page and checks it against its publisher.** For each statistic, Aemorph:

- **Replaces** the figure when its publisher releases a newer number, as with ChatGPT's weekly users here.
- **Labels** the market each figure describes, so a United States survey never stands in for a worldwide one.
- **Removes** the figure once it no longer has a current primary source.

## Turn These Numbers Into AI Visibility

**Find out what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity say about your business today, so you know which answers stand between you and your next leads.** Every engagement starts with a free 30 to 60 minute [strategic conversation](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#strategic-conversation), in which Aemorph learns about your business, explains what it does and shares relevant case studies. The [Hallucination Diagnostic](https://aemorph.com/services/hallucination-diagnostic/) tests a sample of 10 to 20 showstopper questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, with the report in 5 business days, presented on a call; it is included in the [Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1)](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#showstopper-sensor-sprint-1), the [AEO-GEO Audit](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#aeo-geo-audit) and the [ESAG audit](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#esag-audit), so a buyer of any of those three never pays for it separately.

Bought on its own, the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1) is a 30-day showstopper-answer sprint for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and the standalone start for any business: correct in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity within 30 days of publishing, or a 100% refund of Sprint 1 and 60 more days of work. On the enterprise route it runs inside Attain or Apex after the audit and the Influencer Blueprint.

*Terms: the Ground Truth Guarantee covers Sprint 1 bought on its own; Sprint 1 inside a monthly package carries no refund; it does not cover Sprint 2 ([Entity Hardening](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#entity-hardening-sprint-2)), search rankings or Google AI Overviews.
