# International SEO: How to Optimise for Multiple Countries

**International [SEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation) puts the right page in front of searchers in each country and language you serve, so buyers abroad find your business in their own market and enquire.** It rests on four decisions: which markets to target, which URL structure to use, how to tell Google about each version with hreflang, and how to localise content and links for each market. Google ranks pages for each locale on signals it reads from your site, so every decision below changes which page a buyer sees ([Google Search Central, managing multi-regional and multilingual sites](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/international/managing-multi-regional-sites)).

## What Is International SEO?

**International SEO is the practice of making one business rank in the search results of each country and language it serves, so each market reaches a page written for it.** Google separates two cases. A multilingual site offers content in more than one language, such as a Canadian business with English and French versions. A multi-regional site targets users in different countries, such as a manufacturer that ships to both Canada and the United States. Some sites are both. Google tries to match the searcher's language for the first case and the searcher's locale for the second.

## When Is International SEO the Right Move?

**Focus on international SEO once you sell to buyers in more than one country or language, because a single-market site leaves those buyers on a page that does not speak to them.** Three situations call for it: you ship or deliver to more than one country, you serve speakers of more than one language in one country, or you plan to enter a new market and want demand ready when you launch.

Three constraints shape the plan:

- **Local search engines.** In some markets Google is not the main search engine. In mainland China and South Korea, local engines such as Baidu and Naver carry a large part of search, so a Google-only plan reaches part of the audience.
- **Language and culture.** A direct translation misses local terms, spelling, currency and references, and buyers notice.
- **Control.** Local links, local reviews and local business listings sit with third parties in each market, so results depend on work outside your own website.

## How Does International SEO Differ From Local SEO?

**Local SEO wins buyers near one location, and international SEO wins buyers in whole countries or languages, so the two differ in scale, competition and resourcing.**

| Factor | Local SEO | International SEO | What changes for you | Typical first step |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Target area | A town, city or service area | One or more countries or languages | Each market needs its own pages | Pick the markets |
| Main signals | Business Profile, local listings, reviews | URL structure, hreflang, local content and links | Technical set-up carries more weight | Audit current locale signals |
| Competition | Nearby businesses | National and international brands in each market | More pages and links needed per market | Check who ranks in each country |
| Resources | One market's content and listings | Content, links and listings per market | Budget scales with the number of markets | Cost one market before adding more |
| Measurement | Local pack and map rankings | Rankings and traffic per country | Reports split by market | Set up country filters in Search Console |

## How Do You Do International SEO?

**International SEO runs in three steps: plan your markets, choose a URL structure, and optimise content for each region and language, so each step makes the next one cheaper.**

![Key considerations to keep in mind when doing international SEO, including strategy, URLs and content.](https://aemorph.com/media/international-seo-strategy.jpg)

### 1\. Plan your international SEO strategy

**Plan before you build, because the markets you choose decide your URL structure, your keyword research and your budget.** Answer four questions for each market:

1. **Which countries and languages?** List the markets in order of revenue potential.
2. **Which search engines?** Confirm whether Google leads search in each market or a local engine does.
3. **Which keywords?** Research the terms buyers use in each market, in their language and spelling. A term popular in one country differs from the term a buyer in another country types for the same product.
4. **Who does the work?** Decide between your in-house team and an agency. An agency brings experience with hreflang, URL structures and local link building; your own team keeps control. If nobody on your team has run an international project, outside help shortens the learning curve.

### 2\. Choose your URL structure

**Your URL structure tells Google and buyers which country or language a page serves, so choose it before you publish any market's pages.** Google recommends a different URL for each language version, rather than cookies or browser settings that change the language on one URL, because Googlebot usually crawls from the USA and sends requests without a language preference ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/international/managing-multi-regional-sites)).

| Structure | Example | Pros (per Google) | Cons (per Google) | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Country-specific domain (ccTLD) | example.de | Clear geotargeting; server location irrelevant; easy separation of sites | Expensive, with limited availability; more infrastructure; strict ccTLD requirements in some countries; targets a single country | Businesses with a local entity and budget in each country |
| Subdomain on a gTLD | de.example.com | Easy to set up; allows different server locations; easy separation of sites | Users do not always recognise the targeting from the URL alone | Teams that run each market as a separate site |
| Subdirectory on a gTLD | example.com/de/ | Easy to set up; low maintenance on the same host | Users do not always recognise the targeting from the URL alone; single server location; separation harder | Most businesses entering their first few markets |
| URL parameters | site.com?loc=de | None listed | Google does not recommend them; segmentation is difficult | Avoid |
| Separate brand domains | examplefrance.com | Clear market branding | Each domain builds authority on its own; higher cost; risk of duplicate content | Brands with distinct local names |

#### How does Google decide which country a page targets?

**Google reads several signals to decide a page's target locale: the ccTLD, hreflang statements, server location and other local signals such as local addresses, phone numbers, language, currency, links from local sites and your Business Profile.** Google treats some ccTLDs, such as .tv, .me, .io and .co, as generic domains, and it treats regional domains such as .eu and .asia as generic too. Google ignores locational meta tags such as geo.position and geotargeting HTML attributes.

### 3\. Optimise content for regions and languages

**Write content for each market rather than translating one page word for word, so each page uses the terms, spelling, currency and references your buyers there expect.** Google determines a page's language from its visible content, not from lang attributes or the URL, so keep one language per page for both content and navigation, and avoid side-by-side translations.

- **Localise, then translate.** Start from each market's keyword research, then write or adapt the page.
- **Let buyers switch.** Link each page to its other language versions, and never redirect a visitor automatically based on a guess about their language, because that blocks users and search engines from seeing every version.
- **Handle duplicates.** Where two markets share one language, such as two English-speaking countries, pick a preferred version for any near-identical page and use rel="canonical" together with hreflang, as Google advises.

#### What is hreflang?

**Hreflang is an annotation that tells Google which language and regional version of a page serves which audience.** It pairs a language code with an optional region code, such as en-GB or fr-CA, from the ISO 639-1 and ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standards, and sits in the page's HTML head, an HTTP header or your sitemap ([Google Search Central, localised versions](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/international/localized-versions)). Every version lists itself and every alternate, each linked page links back, and an x-default page catches searchers who match no listed version. Google ignores hreflang pairs that do not point to each other.

## Which Practices Make International SEO Work?

**Seven practices keep each market's pages ranking, and each one closes a gap that sends buyers to the wrong page or to a competitor.**

1. **Build one version per language and market.** Give each its own URL and connect the set with hreflang.
2. **Localise content.** Use the local language, spelling, currency, examples and contact details.
3. **Research keywords per market.** Base each page on what buyers in that country search.
4. **Earn local links.** Links from websites in each country are one of the signals Google reads for locale, so reach out to local publications, partners and associations.
5. **Optimise for local search engines.** Where a local engine leads, follow its own webmaster guidelines.
6. **Make every version mobile-friendly.** Check each market's pages on a phone, since buyers in every market search on mobile.
7. **Monitor results per country.** Filter Google Search Console by country and track rankings for each market separately.

## Common Questions About International SEO

**The questions below cover cost-benefit, timing and the obstacles that stop international projects.**

### Is international SEO worth it?

**International SEO is worth it when you have buyers, delivery and support ready in the new market, because rankings there only pay back when you serve the enquiries.** It adds content, technical and link work for every market. Start with one new market, measure the enquiries it brings, then add the next.

### How long does international SEO take to work?

**Timing depends on competition in each market and how many pages are new, and on Aemorph's international SEO engagements your first ranking movements show within 45 days of publishing.** The clock starts at publication, not at the start of the project, and the milestone is an SEO ranking measure. See the [international SEO service](https://aemorph.com/services/international-seo/) for how Aemorph runs it.

### What are the most common obstacles in international SEO?

**Four obstacles stop international projects: missing keyword research, broken hreflang, sites that fail on mobile, and content that is translated but not localised.**

| Obstacle | What goes wrong | Effect on your buyers | Fix | Check |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| No market keyword research | Pages target terms nobody in that market uses | Buyers never find the page | Research each market in its own language | Search Console queries by country |
| Broken hreflang | Return links or codes are missing | Buyers land on the wrong country's page | List every version on every page, with return links and x-default | Crawl report of hreflang errors |
| Not mobile-friendly | Pages fail on small screens | Buyers leave before they enquire | Test every market's templates on a phone | PageSpeed Insights on mobile |
| Translated, not localised | Wording, spelling and currency feel foreign | Buyers trust the page less | Adapt examples, currency and contact details | Review by a native speaker |

*Four common obstacles and their fixes.*

Each mismatch between markets has a recognisable symptom: the wrong country's page ranking, a price in the wrong currency or facts that differ between market sites. Aemorph's guide to [international SEO challenges in Southeast Asia](https://aemorph.com/guides/international-seo-challenges-southeast-asia/) traces each symptom to its cause and fix.

## Putting International SEO in Place

**International SEO is ongoing work: you monitor each market, fix what drifts and add markets one at a time, so the visibility you build in one country carries into the next.** Hreflang, canonical tags and crawl checks belong in every [on-page SEO audit](https://aemorph.com/guides/on-page-seo-audit/), and local link building follows the tactics in the [off-page SEO guide](https://aemorph.com/guides/off-page-seo/).
