# AI Overview Competitor Displacement: Why Google Quotes Your Competitor Instead of You

**AI Overview competitor displacement happens when Google's AI Overview answers your buyer's question with a competitor's page, so the buyer meets their name before yours.** It happens even when your own page ranks on page one. Google builds each overview from passages that answer the parts of a question, not from rankings alone. Aemorph's AEO service rebuilds those answers on your ranking pages. In June 2026, Ahrefs recorded Google AI Overviews citing one Aemorph client, Eye Concepts, for 226 Australian search terms.

## AI Overview Competitor Displacement Shows Up Even When You Rank

**Competitor displacement in AI Overviews puts a competitor's name or link inside Google's answer to a question your page already ranks for, so their business reaches your buyer first and your result drops below the fold.** Ranking and being quoted are separate outcomes. Ahrefs found that [38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/) (Ahrefs, 2026), which leaves 62% of cited pages outside that query's top 10.

| Symptom | What the buyer sees | Likely cause to test | Fix | Where it gets fixed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| You rank in the top three, a competitor is cited | The overview links a competitor's page above your organic result | Your page answers the question late, or inside a long paragraph | Put a direct answer under a heading that matches the question | The ranking page itself |
| A competitor is named in the overview text | The answer names their business as an example or a recommendation | Their facts are stated plainly and repeated on other sources | State your own facts plainly and confirm them outside your site | Your service pages and one outside source |
| A directory or forum is cited instead of you | The overview quotes a listing or thread that names a competitor | The listing answers a sub-question your site never answers | Answer that sub-question on your own page | A new section or page on your site |
| Your page is cited, their brand is named | Your link sits in the sources, their name sits in the text | Your page answers the question without naming your business in the answer | Name your business inside the answering sentence | The cited passage on your page |
| Clicks fall while rankings hold | Search Console shows steady positions and fewer clicks | An overview now answers the query before the results | Win the citation in the overview for that query | The page ranking for the affected query |

*Symptoms, likely causes and fixes for AI Overview competitor displacement.*

### Why is my competitor in the AI Overview and not me?

**Google cites the page whose passage answers the question, or one part of it, most directly, so a competitor with a clearer answer wins the citation even when your page ranks higher.** Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode [use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) (Google Search Central, checked October 2026). Each sub-question is a separate chance for a competitor to be quoted.

---

## Google Builds AI Overviews From Passages, Not Rankings Alone

**Google selects AI Overview sources from indexed pages whose passages answer the question and its sub-questions, so the clearest, most complete answer takes the citation your ranking alone does not secure.** Google draws on your pages, your Google Business Profile and what other sites say about you.

Google's documentation sets the entry rule plainly: a page is eligible as a supporting link when it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements. Eligibility is the floor. Selection then depends on whether a passage on your page answers the fanned-out questions better than the alternatives. Three gaps hand the citation to a competitor:

- **Buried answers.** The answer sits deep in a paragraph, after context, instead of in the first sentence under a matching heading.
- **Missing sub-questions.** Your page covers the main question and skips the price, timeline or comparison questions Google also searches.
- **Unconfirmed facts.** Your claims appear only on your own site, while the competitor's facts repeat across listings and articles.

### Does ranking first get you into the AI Overview?

**Ranking first makes your page eligible and visible, but the citation goes to the passage: a lower-ranked page with a clearer answer wins the link.** Rankings are the foundation; the answer passage decides the citation.

## AEO Puts an Answer Google Quotes on Your Page

**[AEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation), answer engine optimisation, wins back a displaced AI Overview by rebuilding the answer on your page, so Google finds a passage worth quoting for each question your buyers ask.** It sits on [SEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), search engine optimisation, which earns the ranking that makes your page eligible. It runs alongside [GEO](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), generative engine optimisation, which gets you cited inside the AI chats. Aemorph runs the fix as a sequence:

1. **Groups** the question and the sub-questions Google fans out to, taken from the overviews and People Also Ask results showing for your query, into a [prompt cluster](https://aemorph.com/glossary/#prompt-cluster).
2. **Covers** the attributes the AI Overview answer already names for each question, then states the same attributes on your page in more depth and in fewer words.
3. **Answers** each question in one bold, plain sentence directly under a heading phrased as the buyer asks it.
4. **Structures** comparisons, prices and steps as tables and numbered lists that state each fact once.
5. **Names** your business inside the answering sentence, so a quoted passage carries your name as well as your link.
6. **Confirms** your core facts on your Google Business Profile and on outside sources, so Google finds them stated the same way more than once.
7. **Checks** that each page is indexed and snippet-eligible, with Aemorph's specifications applied by your team or vendor and verified by Aemorph.
8. **Tracks** overview citations across the whole cluster, not one keyword, in Aemorph's monthly reporting.

> **Case study · Eyewear and eye care, Australia**
>
> **Google AI Overviews cite Eye Concepts for 226 Australian search terms.**
>
> Those terms carry 63,430 combined monthly searches. [Read the Eye Concepts case study](https://aemorph.com/case-studies/eye-concepts/)

> **Case study · Multi-practice orthodontics, Australia**
>
> **Google AI Overviews cite Smile Team for 223 Australian search terms.**
>
> Those terms carry 22,650 combined monthly searches.

*[Source: Ahrefs, June 2026](https://aemorph.com/sources/#ahrefs-june-2026-2e2d)*

These results come from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from; they are Google AI Overview citations, not citations inside the AI chats.

### How long does it take to appear in Google AI Overviews?

**Google decides when a page enters an AI Overview, so Aemorph tracks overview citations by cluster rather than promising a date.** Rankings follow a separate clock: your first ranking movements show within 45 days of publishing. That 45-day line is an SEO ranking milestone, and AI Overview citations are measured separately, from the date the rebuilt page goes live.

*[Source: Results reported in past client testimonials](https://aemorph.com/sources/#results-reported-in-past-client-testimonials)*

### How do you check whether a page is eligible for AI Overviews?

**A page is eligible for AI Overviews when Google has indexed it and is allowed to show a snippet from it, which Search Console's URL Inspection tool confirms page by page.** A nosnippet rule, a noindex tag or a blocked page removes that eligibility before any answer is judged.

## Displacement Costs You Clicks Before the Buyer Scrolls

**A displaced AI Overview costs you clicks on the queries you already rank for, because buyers read the competitor's quoted answer first and fewer of them reach the organic results below.** In a July 2025 study of US adults, Pew Research Center found Google users [clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Ahrefs measured [a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview is present](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks-update/) (Ahrefs, February 2026), across 300,000 keywords.

| Displacement state | Risk level | Cost of leaving it | When to recheck | Next step |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Overview cites a competitor on a bottom-of-funnel query | High | Buyers ready to choose read the competitor's answer first | Straight away, before other content work | Rebuild the answer on your ranking page |
| Overview cites a directory naming competitors | Medium | Buyers leave for a list where you compete on equal terms or are absent | After the page update goes live | Answer the sub-question on your site and confirm your listing |
| Overview cites you, names a competitor | Medium | Your page earns the link, a competitor earns the recall | After the answering sentence is rewritten | Name your business in the cited passage |
| No overview shows for the query | Low | Clicks follow rankings as before | When Search Console shows a click drop at stable positions | Keep the answer passage ready |

*Risk level and recheck point for each displacement state, as illustrative scenarios.*

Aemorph sets no fixed recheck interval. Your first working day with Aemorph is the first check date, and pages are then assigned for update in order of importance: bottom-of-funnel, middle-of-funnel, then top-of-funnel. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type, so a drop in clicks at stable positions is the first signal to check.

### Does an AI Overview reduce clicks to my website?

**An AI Overview reduces clicks to the organic results below it, and Ahrefs measured the largest drop on the top-ranking page.** Being the cited source inside the overview keeps your name in front of the buyer at the point where the click decision happens.

## AEO Claims Stay Inside What Your Business Proves

**Each passage written to win an AI Overview states only facts your business supports, so the claim Google quotes is one you stand behind.** A quoted claim travels further than the page it came from. Aemorph writes core-fact sentences for your approval and publishes only what your nominated point of contact signs off, including any comparison with a named competitor.

Copying a competitor's cited page adds nothing Google has not already seen. Google's guidance for AI features points to the same foundation as Search overall: helpful, reliable, people-first content that follows its spam policies.

### Is it safe to compare your business with a named competitor?

**A comparison stays safe when each claim about the competitor matches what the competitor publishes, carries a date and is stated neutrally.** Claims without evidence create accuracy and legal risk; the specifics for your market are a question for a qualified legal adviser in your jurisdiction.
