# Keyword Research: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide for Singapore Businesses

**Keyword research uncovers the exact phrases Singapore buyers search for, the number of searches each phrase gets in Singapore every month and the effort each one takes to rank, so you build pages around searches that turn into traffic, leads and sales.** In Ahrefs' Singapore database, "keyword research" gets about 450 searches a month and "how to do keyword research" about 80. The guide below runs in six parts: finding ideas, analysing them, choosing the right ones, two advanced techniques, the tools, and the number of keywords a site needs.

## What Is Keyword Research?

**Keyword research is the SEO task of finding and weighing up the terms people in Singapore type into Google and other search engines when they want a product, a service or a piece of information.** The results set the topics your site covers and the words each page is built around, so your content meets the searches your audience already runs. It sits underneath every [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/what-is-seo/) strategy: a page that targets no real search draws little organic traffic, no matter how well it reads.

### Why does keyword research matter for your Singapore business?

**Keyword research tells you what Singapore buyers are looking for before you draft a page, so your content answers their questions and ranks for the searches that lead to enquiries.** It also points to topics rising in your market, the questions your audience asks most often and the openings your competitors in Singapore have not covered.

## Singapore Keyword Research Starts With Google and Singapore Search Volumes

**Google held more than nine tenths of search engine market share in Singapore in September 2026, so Singapore keyword research centres on Google's data and on each tool's Singapore database.** Google held 92.16% of search engine market share in Singapore in September 2026, with Bing at 4.53% ([StatCounter, Singapore](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/singapore)). [DataReportal's Digital 2026: Singapore](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-singapore) counts 5.78 million internet users as of October 2025, 98.4% of the population. IMDA's [Singapore Digital Economy Report 2025](https://www.imda.gov.sg/resources/press-releases-factsheets-and-speeches/factsheets/2025/ar-sgde-2025) found that 73.8% of Singapore workers used AI tools at work in 2024.

| Measure | Figure | Market and date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google search engine market share | 92.16% | Singapore, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing search engine market share | 4.53% | Singapore, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Internet users | 5.78 million, 98.4% of the population | Singapore, as of October 2025 | DataReportal |
| Workers using AI tools at work | 73.8% | Singapore, 2024 | IMDA |
| Searches for "keyword research" | 450 a month | Singapore, October 2026 | Ahrefs |
| Searches for "keyword research guide" | 0 a month | Singapore, October 2026 | Ahrefs |

*Sources: StatCounter Global Stats, search engine market share, Singapore, September 2026; DataReportal, Digital 2026: Singapore, data as of October 2025; IMDA, Singapore Digital Economy Report 2025, 6 October 2025; Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Singapore database, monthly averages, retrieved 24 October 2026.*

**Singapore volumes are small next to worldwide totals, so read every figure from the Singapore database and treat a zero as a tool estimate, not proof that nobody searches.** "keyword research guide" shows 0 searches a month in Ahrefs' Singapore database, against 450 for "keyword research". Google's Keyword Planner help page notes that keywords with very low volume are not shown, so pair tool estimates with the queries Google Search Console reports once a page is live.

## How Do You Find Keyword Ideas?

**Six methods supply keyword ideas, and each one starts free: brainstorming, competitor analysis, keyword tools, Google autocomplete, People Also Ask and related searches.** Use several at once, because every method catches terms the others leave out.

### 1\. Brainstorm from your Singapore buyers' questions

**Map out who your buyers are, what they need and which questions they raise, then rewrite each question as a search term.** One page per persona is enough: name, needs, questions. Your sales and customer service teams field these questions daily, so collect theirs too. Aim for a long list now; you cut it down later.

### 2\. Analyse your Singapore competitors

**The blogs and sitemaps of your Singapore competitors show the topics they target, and the holes in their coverage show where ranking comes easier.** For a Singapore home furnishings shop, go through the blog and sitemap of a major retailer in that category to see each kind of content it puts out. List the specific phrases it has not targeted, and test each one against its difficulty score and the pages already ranking before it goes on your plan. Paid tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush show the competitor keywords recorded in their own databases.

### 3\. Use keyword research tools

**Keyword tools turn a seed term into a set of related ideas, but each tool attaches a different set of metrics.** Google Keyword Planner gives search volume and advertising estimates, while SEO platforms such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz Keyword Explorer give their own organic difficulty scores alongside other research data. The tools section below compares them.

### 4\. Check Google autocomplete

**Google's autocomplete predictions list common searches that open with your words, a fast and free supply of keyword ideas.** Begin typing your topic into Google and jot down the predictions. For "home decor", the dated screenshot shows predictions such as "home decor ideas", "home decor items" and "home decor stores".

### 5\. Review People Also Ask

**The People Also Ask box holds questions related to your search, and every one of them is a ready heading or article idea.** Run the search and open the box; every question you click adds further questions. For "home decor", Google showed questions such as "What is meant by home decor?" and "Is interior design the same as home decor?". [AlsoAsked](https://alsoasked.com/) maps these questions for a keyword, and [AnswerThePublic](https://answerthepublic.com/) lists the questions people ask about a term.

### 6\. Check related searches

**The related searches under Google's results offer connected query ideas to assess as possible page topics.** For "home decor", the dated screenshot shows "affordable home decor singapore", "home decor shop singapore" and "home decor stores".

## How Do You Analyse Keywords?

**Weigh each keyword against six measures: search volume, keyword difficulty, keyword length, click-through rate, traffic potential and cost per click.** Taken as a set, they tell you which terms are worth the work for your site.

### Search volume in Singapore

**Search volume estimates how often a keyword is searched each month: it measures demand, not the number of people who see or visit your page.** Set your tool to Singapore before you read the figure. Google Keyword Planner estimates how often a keyword is searched and what it costs to target, and it leaves out keywords with very low volume ([Google Ads Help, Keyword Planner](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7337243)). Google Trends tracks whether interest in a term is growing or shrinking. How much traffic a page wins depends on where it ranks, its CTR and the features on the results page, so judge those apart from volume.

### Keyword difficulty

**Keyword difficulty measures how tough it is to break onto the first page for a keyword, normally on a 0 to 100 scale, judged on the strength of the pages ranking now.** Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz calculate separate scores, so compare figures within one tool rather than between tools. Balance difficulty against your site's authority: a young site makes faster progress on easier terms, and an established site goes after the harder ones.

### Short-tail, mid-tail and long-tail keywords

**Across the Singapore examples below, searches drop as the wording grows longer and more specific, yet word count alone never fixes how competitive a keyword is or what the searcher intends.** Long-tail refers to the low-demand portion of search demand rather than a set number of words, so a long phrase is sometimes hard to rank for and a short one sometimes rarely searched. Read the difficulty score and study the ranking pages for each term. The examples come from Ahrefs' Singapore database.

| Type | Typical length | Singapore example (monthly searches) | Volume and competition | Best use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Short-tail | One or two words | seo services (1,700) | Most searches of the three; read difficulty in your tool | Pillar pages on an established site |
| Mid-tail | Two or three words | seo consultant singapore (800) | Fewer searches, names the market; read difficulty in your tool | Core pages for growing sites |
| Long-tail | Three or more words | seo audit services singapore (10) | Fewest searches of the three, narrowest wording; read difficulty in your tool | Focused pages built around one need |

*Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Singapore database, monthly averages, retrieved 24 October 2026.*

### Click-through rate

**Click-through rate, CTR, divides the clicks your listing gets by the number of times it is shown.** Shown 100 times with five clicks, a listing has a 5% CTR. Google Search Console's Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position for the queries and pages it reports ([Search Console Help, Performance report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7576553)), which is not every query people type. A page with a good position and a weak CTR needs a sharper title or meta description, or it sits on a query that Google's own features answer on the results page.

### Traffic potential

**Traffic potential estimates how much organic traffic the top-ranking page gets from every keyword it ranks for.** Ahrefs shows it in Keywords Explorer ([Ahrefs Keywords Explorer](https://ahrefs.com/keywords-explorer)). It is often larger than one keyword's volume, because a strong page ranks for many related searches.

### Cost per click

**Cost per click, CPC, is the average amount an advertiser pays for one click on a keyword in Google Ads, and a high CPC points to a term with commercial value in paid search.** At SGD 1 a click, five clicks cost you SGD 5. Keyword Planner and most keyword tools list CPC beside volume. CPC comes from the advertising auction and says nothing direct about organic ranking difficulty, so judge organic competition from the ranking pages and your tool's difficulty score.

## How Do You Choose the Right Keywords?

**Keep keywords that clear three checks: they match what you sell, their search intent matches the page you have in mind, and your site carries the authority to compete.**

### Relevance

**Go after only the keywords that describe your offer, because visitors who came for something else leave without getting in touch.** A Tampines pet groomer gains little from ranking for "cat food".

### Search intent

**Search intent is the purpose behind a search, and the page you publish has to fit it to rank.** Test intent by running the search and studying what ranks: product and service pages point to buying intent, and articles point to a hunt for information.

| Intent | What the searcher wants | Example query | What usually ranks | Page to build |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Informational | To learn about a topic | SEO tips | Guides and articles | A guide |
| Navigational | To reach a specific site | Aemorph contact | The brand's own page | A clear brand page |
| Commercial | To compare options before buying | best SEO agencies Singapore | Reviews and comparisons | A comparison or service page |
| Transactional | To buy or hire now | SEO services Singapore | Service and product pages | A service or product page |

*The four types of search intent, with Singapore example queries.*

Someone typing "SEO services Singapore" is probably ready to hire; someone typing "SEO tips" wants to learn. Publish a service page for the first search and a guide for the second.

### Authority

**Your site's authority, the degree of trust search engines place in it, decides how competitive a keyword you are able to win.** Authority takes time to build. On a new Singapore site, go for lower-difficulty and niche terms first and step up to harder terms as authority rises. Look at the authority of the sites that already rank before you commit to a term.

## Which Advanced Techniques Find More Keyword Opportunities?

**Two techniques add the most to the basics: keyword gap analysis, which surfaces the terms competitors rank for and you lack, and cannibalisation checks, which catch your own pages that duplicate one intent and hold each other back.**

### Keyword gap analysis

**A keyword gap analysis lines up your rankings next to your competitors' and lists the relevant keywords where they rank and you do not.** Aemorph runs gap analyses for clients against up to 15 competitors at a time. Ahrefs offers the same comparison in its [Content Gap](https://ahrefs.com/content-gap) report.

### Keyword cannibalisation

**Keyword cannibalisation is harmful overlap: two or more of your pages serve the same search intent and drag down the page you want to rank.** Pages that share a keyword are often fine, because each one answers a different need around the term, so keep distinct pages that serve distinct needs. Check before you act: review your content at set intervals with a crawler such as Screaming Frog or a tool such as Semrush, then look in Search Console for queries where your pages trade positions. Where pages duplicate one intent, consolidate them into a single page and redirect the retired URL to it. Keep canonical tags for duplicate or substantially equivalent URLs that remain live.

## Which Keyword Research Tools Work Best in Singapore?

**Begin with Google's free tools, since Google held 92.16% of search engine market share in Singapore in September 2026, and add a paid platform such as Ahrefs or Semrush when you need competitor data and difficulty scores in bulk.**

| Tool | What it shows | Free option (checked October 2026) | Best for | Link |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google Trends | Relative search interest over time, rising and related queries | Free | Spotting seasonal and rising topics | trends.google.com |
| Google Keyword Planner | Search volume estimates and the cost to target keywords | Free with a Google Ads account | Volume and CPC estimates | [Keyword Planner](https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/) |

*Keyword research tools compared; vendor prices as each vendor publishes them.*

Ahrefs is Aemorph's main keyword research tool. In Keywords Explorer, type one or more keywords, pick Singapore as the target country and run the search to get the volume, difficulty, traffic potential and CPC of each term in Singapore.

## How Many Keywords Does Your Site Need?

**There is no fixed count: build each page around one main topic and its close variants, and track the keywords that bring in buyers.**

### How many keywords does one page target?

**Each page targets one main keyword together with the close variants and questions that carry the same intent.** Relevance and quality outweigh quantity.

### How many keywords is too many?

**Forcing keywords in unnaturally, or adding unrelated terms, hurts the reader's experience, and Google names keyword stuffing as a spam practice ([Google Search Central, spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies)).** Use a keyword only where it reads naturally.

### How many keywords is it worth tracking?

**Track the keywords linked to your key pages and your revenue, and extend the list as the site expands.** The [guide to tracking keyword rankings](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/keyword-rankings/) and the [rank tracking tools review](https://aemorph.com/saas-tools/seo/rank-tracking/) show you how.

## Turn Keyword Research Into Singapore Rankings

**Keyword research earns its keep only when you publish pages built on the terms and refresh them, so rerun it each time you plan fresh content or revisit older pages.** If you want a seasoned team to handle the research and the writing, Aemorph's [SEO service](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/services/seo/) shapes every page around the searches your Singapore buyers run. Aemorph is headquartered at 34 South Bridge Road, Singapore.
