# Brand Categorisation in AI: Why ChatGPT Files Your Singapore Business Under the Wrong Heading

**A wrong category in an AI answer misrepresents your Singapore business's specialism when buyers compare providers, and Aemorph's working model treats it as a visibility problem on the questions you serve best.** The failure is called brand categorisation in AI: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity describe your business as a neighbouring category rather than the one you actually operate in. These tools build a description of a business from many sources, and your own website is just one of them. Where the other sources use a generic or adjacent label, that is the label the assistant repeats to a Singapore buyer.

## The Symptom: Recommended for the Wrong Questions in Singapore

**The symptom is a business routed to the wrong buyer questions, because an AI assistant describes it as wider, narrower or different from the category it trades in.** Picture a specialist paediatric dental practice in Tampines described as a general dental practice, or a boutique corporate advisory firm in Raffles Place described as a generalist consultancy. Nothing else is wrong: the business is real, operating and named correctly. Only the heading is off.

| Symptom | What the buyer sees | Likely cause to test | Fix | Where it gets fixed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Wrong specialism | An assistant describes the business as broader or narrower than it is | The clearest signal the model found was generic, not specific | Update the primary category, then restate the specific category in plain language | Your Google Business Profile, then your primary record |
| Wrong industry | The business gets grouped with an adjacent but different sector | No single source states the specific category plainly and repeatedly | Narrow every secondary listing to the same specific category | Singapore directory listings, old profiles, review platforms and social bios |
| Right category, wrong emphasis | The category is technically correct but omits the business's actual focus | The stated category competes with older, more generic content still live | Link the records that state the specific category to a public identifier and retire the generic labels | A public identifier, plus the older content still live |

*Symptoms, likely causes and fixes when AI miscategorises a Singapore business.*

### Why does ChatGPT describe my Singapore business as the wrong type of company?

**Aemorph tests whether generic or adjacent labels in the sources available to each assistant explain the category mismatch, because in Aemorph's working model an unclear, hidden or missing specific category is one likely cause.**

---

## Why the Category Drifts: The Hidden Mechanism

**Under Aemorph's working model, drift happens when other sources state a broader label for your business more clearly or more often than your specific category, and the drift takes visibility away from the questions your specialism answers.** When a buyer asks directly, the assistant prefers that broader label to the one you use yourself; Aemorph's diagnostic tests for this cause.

It feels as though your homepage answers the question, since anyone in Singapore who reads it grasps your specialism straight away. For the assistant, though, the homepage is only one input.

The [Authority Truth Engine](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/llm-influencer-system/authority-truth-engine/), Aemorph's on-site entity SEO and structured data, diagnoses brand categorisation failures along with three related problems: [the missing knowledge graph entity](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/missing-knowledge-graph-entity/), [schema markup errors](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/schema-markup-errors-diagnostic/) and [cross-platform AI brand inconsistency](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/cross-platform-ai-brand-inconsistency/).

### What triggers a category error for a Singapore business?

**The trigger is disagreement: your sources describe your business differently, and the broader label is the clearer or more frequent one.** Beyond your homepage, four kinds of source are worth reviewing for that broader label:

- **Singapore directory listings:** the category each one states.
- **Old profiles:** any left from an earlier stage of the business.
- **Review platforms:** the heading each one files the business under.
- **Social bios:** the one-line description the business gives itself.

## Where Singapore Buyers Meet Your Category: Google, AI Tools at Work and the AI Chats

**Singapore buyers meet your category in Google and in AI tools: Google held 92.16% of Singapore's search engine market share in September 2026 ([StatCounter](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/singapore)), and [IMDA](https://www.imda.gov.sg/resources/press-releases-factsheets-and-speeches/factsheets/2025/ar-sgde-2025) found that 73.8% of Singapore workers used AI tools at work in 2024.** Almost the whole population is online, with [DataReportal](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-singapore) counting 5.78 million internet users in Singapore as of October 2025, 98.4% of the population. IMDA's figures also split by firm size: AI adoption reached 62.5% among non-SMEs in 2024 and 14.5% among SMEs, up from 4.2% for SMEs in 2023.

| Measure | Figure | Market and date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google share of search engine market | 92.16% | Singapore, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing share of search engine market | 4.53% | Singapore, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Workers using AI tools at work | 73.8% | Singapore, 2024 | IMDA |
| AI adoption among non-SMEs | 62.5% | Singapore, 2024 | IMDA |
| AI adoption among SMEs | 14.5%, up from 4.2% in 2023 | Singapore, 2024 | IMDA |
| Internet users | 5.78 million, 98.4% of the population | Singapore, as of October 2025 | DataReportal |

**With Google this dominant in Singapore, your Google Business Profile category is the first record in the correction order, and the AI chats are where the category question gets retested.** Further Singapore figures are on the [AI search statistics for Singapore](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/statistics/ai-search-statistics-singapore/) page.

## The Fix: Correcting the Category in Singapore

**The fix brings the records you control into line with the buyer questions your specialism fits, so the sources AI chats read name the category you actually trade in.** One correction feeds the three disciplines behind where you appear. [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), Generative Engine Optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. [AEO](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation), Answer Engine Optimisation, gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), search engine optimisation, earns your place in Google's regular results.

### How do you correct a business category in an AI answer in Singapore?

**The correction begins with the primary category in your Google Business Profile, carries the same category through your other records, then retests the question that produced the wrong heading.** Aemorph is a Google Partner. Which of these steps Aemorph makes and which your team or IT vendor makes depends on the scope in your quote. The sequence is:

1. **Update** your Google Business Profile's primary category to the one you trade in.
2. **Restate** the specific category in plain words on your approved [LLM info page](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#llm-info-page), the page on your site that publishes your signed-off answers for AI, and on your own authoritative pages, in place of any vaguer default wording.
3. **Narrow** each secondary listing, Singapore directory entry and profile to the nearest accurate category the platform offers for your specialism, and remove generic labels from an earlier stage of the business.
4. **Anchor** your records to a public identifier, so every source that states the specific category points to one entity rather than standing alone.
5. **Cross-confirm** the result by putting the original category question back to the assistants your target buyers use.

One Singapore identifier already belongs to your business: the Unique Entity Number, which [ACRA describes](https://data.gov.sg/collections/1/view) as a standard identification number for entities, from businesses and partnerships to charities and societies, to interact with government agencies. Make sure the business name your listings show matches the entity registered under your UEN; entity details are updated through ACRA's Bizfile portal.

## Left Uncorrected: What a Wrong Category Costs a Singapore Business

**Each time a buyer repeats the question, a wrong category misstates your specialism again, and in Aemorph's working model the question then favours providers filed under the right heading.** For context on clicks, a US study by Pew Research Center found that [a Google search page carrying an AI summary produced a click to a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% without one](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) (Pew Research Center, 2025). Pew also reported that about [18% of the Google searches it tracked produced an AI summary in March 2025, and 58% of respondents ran at least one search that produced one](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) (Pew Research Center, 2025). These are US figures about click behaviour; they do not measure categorisation, leads or Singapore users.

| Search page | What the user clicked | Share of visits | Sample | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| No AI summary | A traditional result link | 15% | 900 US adults, March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |
| With an AI summary | A traditional result link | 8% | 900 US adults, March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |

*Source: Pew Research Center (United States), "Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results", July 2025.*

| Category state | Cost of leaving it | When to recheck | Next step | Question to retest with |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Generic label dominates | Your business is recommended for the wrong questions and missed for the right ones | Immediately, before any other content work | Update the primary category in your Google Business Profile, restate the specific category on the primary record, then narrow every listing to match | "What type of business is \[Business\]?" |
| Category stated but inconsistent | Tested answers return different categories for the same business | After each listing is corrected | Link the records that state the specific category to a public identifier | "Best \[specific category\] in Singapore?" |
| Category corrected and confirmed | The listings drift back to generic labels when a change goes unchecked | After any service-line change | Update every listing whenever the service line changes | Both questions, on every assistant your target buyers use |

*Cost and recheck point by category state, Singapore.*

Recheck timing comes from your site's own record rather than a fixed calendar. Aemorph reads page and site publishing dates from your XML sitemap; without one, there is no reliable way to know when a page last changed. Your first working day with Aemorph is the first check date. Pages then queue for update by importance: bottom-of-funnel pages, then middle-of-funnel solution-aware pages, then middle-of-funnel evaluation pages, then top-of-funnel pages. Aemorph's working model treats the middle and bottom of the funnel as most important for AEO and GEO, so the category wording on those pages is checked first.

The mechanism also runs the other way, under the same working model: when your specific category becomes the strongest and most repeated signal in the records, an assistant has consistent evidence for that category and less supporting the generic one.

### Does the wrong AI category cost Singapore businesses leads?

**In Aemorph's working model, yes: a buyer who asks for one specific type of provider is less likely to be shown a business filed under another heading, however well it fits the request.** It also exposes you to the wrong comparison, since an assistant listing "best providers of X in Singapore" is less likely to include a business it describes as Y.

---

## The Accuracy Question: Who Corrects a Public Misstatement in Singapore?

**The correction of a public misstatement about your business runs through the records you control, even when an AI assistant wrote the words, and that is what protects how Singapore buyers compare you.** Your primary record, your listings and your profiles are the records you are able to edit, and they are where the cost of a category error comes down.

Your own published claims answer to Singapore's advertising rules. The [Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore states](https://asas.org.sg/Resources/CPFTA) that, under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, "it is an unfair practice for a retailer to make false or misleading claims", and that one of the general principles of the Singapore Code of Advertising Practice is truthful presentation. Those obligations sit with your business and cover what your business says about itself; Aemorph's guide to the [ASAS advertising code](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/asas-advertising-code/) covers them in more detail.

*Source: ASAS, "CPFTA", checked 24 October 2026.*

*General guidance, not legal advice.*

### Is a Singapore business responsible for how AI describes it?

**A Singapore business answers for the accuracy of what it publishes about itself, and that published record is also where the category error gets fixed.** After the misstatement is found, the primary category in your Google Business Profile and the specific category on your own record and listings are corrected, with your quote setting which of those edits Aemorph makes. The wording of the AI answer remains the assistant's own.

## Restore Reliability With the Authority Truth Engine

**Correct your category with one specific, confirmed category record rather than a one-off page edit, starting with which AI answers file your Singapore business under the wrong heading.** The [Authority Truth Engine](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/llm-influencer-system/authority-truth-engine/) builds your [verified record](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#verified-record), the facts your business supplies and approves; your [Brand Codex](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#brand-codex), your brand fact sheet, is that record. The [Hallucination Diagnostic](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/services/hallucination-diagnostic/) identifies category conflicts by putting a sample of 10 to 20 of your [showstopper questions](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#showstopper-questions), the buyer questions that stop a purchase when AI answers them badly, to the AI chats. The report arrives in 5 business days and is presented on a call.

Bought on its own, the [Showstopper Sensor](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/services/30-day-showstopper-sensor-sprint/) (Sprint 1), a 30-day showstopper-answer sprint for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, includes the Diagnostic and publishes your approved answers to the showstopper questions by day 30. On the enterprise route it runs inside Attain or Apex, after the audit and the Influencer Blueprint. [Entity Hardening](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#entity-hardening-sprint-2) (Sprint 2), Aemorph's technical entity SEO sprint, covers the entity, schema and public-record work that carries your specific category, in up to 60 days. Aemorph writes the schema specifications and files, your developers or IT vendor implement them in the CMS, and Aemorph verifies the result. Wikidata is a public database and the Google Knowledge Graph is Google's own system: Aemorph makes the Wikidata edits and submits updates to the Google Knowledge Graph, and since their own communities and systems edit and review those records, Aemorph does not guarantee that an edit stays in place.

**Buy the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1) on its own and it comes with the [Ground Truth Guarantee](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#ground-truth-guarantee).** The Ground Truth Guarantee: within 30 days of publishing, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer your showstopper questions with the facts in your Brand Codex. If they do not, Aemorph refunds 100% of your Sprint 1 fee and keeps working on the answers for a further 60 days, 90 days in total.

*Terms: the Ground Truth Guarantee covers Sprint 1 bought on its own; Sprint 1 inside a monthly package carries no refund; it does not cover Sprint 2 ([Entity Hardening](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#entity-hardening-sprint-2)), search rankings or Google AI Overviews.
