# 404 Errors and SEO: Best Practices for Singapore Websites

**A 404 error means the server found nothing at the address someone requested, and on a Singapore site it has no effect on rankings unless the missing page is one you still need.** Problems begin when a live product or service page answers 404, when your own navigation or sitemap leads to a dead address, or when an empty page reports success and Google classes it as a soft 404. Ahrefs' Singapore database shows about 600 searches a month for "404 error". Below, you find what each status code tells Google, and the steps to locate, repair and redirect broken URLs.

## What Is a 404 Error?

**The 404 (Not Found) status code is the server telling a browser or crawler that no resource exists at the URL it asked for.** In MDN Web Docs, which follows the RFC 9110 HTTP Semantics standard, links that end at a 404 are described as broken or dead links ([MDN, 404 Not Found](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/404)). The code and the screen are different layers: the server puts 404 in the response header, and the "page not found" message a visitor reads is only the body attached to it.

### How is a 404 different from a 410?

**A 410 (Gone) reports that the resource has been withdrawn and is not expected back, while a 404 reports only that the address returned nothing.** When a removal is possibly temporary, MDN recommends the 404 ([MDN, 410 Gone](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/410)). Search Console Help confirms that Google currently treats a 410 like a 404, and with Google taking over nine in ten Singapore searches, either code gives the same result.

### Which other 4xx status codes matter for SEO?

**At Google, every 4xx code other than 429 lands in one bucket: the content counts as absent, the URL is removed from the index and Googlebot returns to it less often.** A 429 (Too Many Requests) sits outside that bucket, since Google interprets it as an overloaded server and processes it as a server error.

| Status code | Name | What the browser learns | Common source on a site | How Googlebot responds |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 400 | Bad Request | The server refuses the request as written | A corrupted or malformed URL | Counts the content as absent; removes the URL from the index |
| 401 | Unauthorized | The visitor has to sign in first | A customer portal or intranet page | Counts the content as absent; removes the URL from the index |
| 403 | Forbidden | The server blocks access to the resource | A permissions setting or web application firewall | Counts the content as absent; removes the URL from the index |
| 404 | Not Found | The address holds no resource | A deleted page, a moved page or a mistyped link | Counts the content as absent; removes the URL from the index; revisits it less often |
| 410 | Gone | The resource was removed for good | A page withdrawn deliberately | Same treatment as a 404 |
| 429 | Too Many Requests | The client exceeded the request limit | A rate limit set by the host or CDN | Processes it as a server error and slows crawling |

When Aemorph first published this guide in 2024, it described a 410 as a resource "moved to a different location". Moving a page calls for a 301 or 308 redirect, which takes the visitor to the new address; a 410 sends the visitor nowhere.

## 404 Errors in Singapore: A Google-Led, Mobile-First Market

**Singapore searches run overwhelmingly through Google and most page views happen on phones, so Google's handling of 404s and soft 404s, and the mobile view of your error page, decide what Singapore visitors and crawlers meet.** StatCounter put Google at 92.16% and Bing at 4.53% of Singapore search engine market share in September 2026, with mobile at 56.86% of Singapore page views against 41.56% for desktop ([StatCounter, Singapore](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/singapore)).

| Measure | Figure | Market | Period | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google search engine market share | 92.16% | Singapore | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing search engine market share | 4.53% | Singapore | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Mobile share of page views | 56.86% | Singapore | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Desktop share of page views | 41.56% | Singapore | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Searches for "404 error" | 600 a month | Singapore | October 2026 | Ahrefs |
| Searches for "soft 404" | 100 a month | Singapore | October 2026 | Ahrefs |

*[Sources: StatCounter, September 2026 and others](https://aemorph.com/sources/#statcounter-september-2026-and-others-sg-404)*

**With phones carrying most Singapore page views, design and test your custom 404 page on a small screen first: a search box and two or three clear links fit above the fold, a long list does not.** Google's Search Console reports and URL Inspection tool cover the main share of Singapore search, and Bing's guidelines cover the rest with the same 404 and 301 rules ([Bing Webmaster Guidelines](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a)).

## What Causes 404 Errors?

**On Singapore sites, 404s usually trace back to a page that was taken down or given a new address without a redirect, a link that carries the wrong address, or a server or CMS rule that points requests at a path that does not exist.**

- **Content taken down.** A promotion ends, a product is withdrawn or an article is retired, and nothing replaces the page.
- **Content given a new address.** A site revamp, a new URL scheme or a move to another platform changes the addresses, and the old ones get no redirect.
- **Links with errors.** A menu entry, an internal link or a link from a partner or directory site holds a typo, an obsolete path or a missing character.
- **Addresses typed by hand.** A visitor misspells the URL and reaches a 404 like any other missing page.
- **Server configuration.** A rewrite rule, a relocated folder or a CMS option sends requests for real pages to the wrong place.

### Do URLs that never existed matter?

**No: Google treats 404s for addresses your site never used as safe to ignore.** Scraped copies of your pages, garbled links on other sites and buggy code all generate made-up URLs, and a 404 is the correct reply to them ([Google Search Central Blog, Do 404 errors hurt my site?](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2011/05/do-404s-hurt-my-site)).

## Do 404 Errors Hurt SEO?

**According to Google's Search Console Help, 404s do not harm a site's indexing or ranking, and a 404 is the correct answer for a page removed with no replacement.** The cost stays with the missing address itself: Google takes it out of the index, visitors who arrive there hit a dead end, and links from other websites that point to it stop leading anywhere live ([Search Console Help, 404 errors](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2445990)).

| Situation | Result for the missing URL | Result for your other pages | Next step | How urgent |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A page you took down answers 404 | Leaves Google's index over time | None; your other pages keep their rankings | Keep the 404 or switch to a 410 | Low |
| A page you still want found answers 404 | Leaves the index and no longer ranks | Visitors and links that targeted it lose their landing page | Reinstate the page or redirect it | High |
| Your own link or sitemap targets a 404 | Google keeps finding and fetching a dead address | Visitors using your own links reach a dead end | Correct the link or the sitemap entry | High |
| A relocated page with links from other sites answers 404 | Leaves the index | Those links no longer reach a live page | 301 redirect to the new address | High |
| An address that never existed answers 404 | Nothing to lose | None | Nothing to do | None |

*What a 404 costs and what it leaves untouched, based on Google's Search Console Help.*

*[Source: Google Search Console Help, October 2026](https://aemorph.com/sources/#google-search-console-help-404-errors-october-2026)*

Aemorph's 2024 version of this guide also said a 404 stops crawlers from crawling the rest of a website and that bounce rate counts as a ranking signal against you. Google's crawling documentation supports neither claim: Google drops the missing address, fetches it less often and leaves your other pages as they were.

### Which 404 errors need fixing?

**Fix the 404s that come from your own site: addresses you link to, addresses in your sitemap, and relocated pages that still bring visitors or links from other sites.** Search Console Help advises fixing only the 404s you link to yourself or list in a sitemap, and redirecting any page that moved. Aemorph adds old URLs that other websites still link to, because Aemorph counts a link to a dead page as worthless to the live site until a redirect reclaims it.

### Does Google keep crawling a URL that returns 404?

**Yes: Googlebot keeps asking for a 404 address for some time, less and less often, and no setting makes Google drop it for good.** The "Not found (404)" entry in Search Console's Page indexing report explains this, and adds that a 404 is not necessarily a problem when the page was removed without a replacement ([Search Console Help, Page indexing report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7440203)). Aemorph's guide to [how search engines work](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/how-search-engines-work/) explains how Google crawls, renders, indexes and ranks pages.

## What Is a Soft 404 Error?

**A soft 404 is an error page that tells visitors the content is missing while the server reports 200 (success), so search engines receive a failure disguised as a normal page.** Pages with no main content and blank pages fall into the same group. Google leaves soft 404 pages out of Search and lists them under "Soft 404" in the Page indexing report ([Google Search Central, Troubleshoot crawling errors](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/troubleshoot-crawling-errors)).

### What produces soft 404 errors?

**Soft 404s arise when a site shows an error without sending an error code, or when it redirects every unknown URL to the home page.** Google points to a missing server-side include, a failed database connection, an internal search page with zero results and a JavaScript file that did not load. Search Console Help adds the blanket redirect to the home page. Large sites pay twice, because Google keeps crawling soft 404 pages and spends crawl budget on them ([Google, Crawl budget management](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/large-site-managing-crawl-budget)).

### How do you fix a soft 404?

**Return the code that fits what really happened: 404 or 410 when the content is gone, 301 when it moved, and a rendering fix when the page is real.**

| State of the page | Singapore example | Right response | Status code | How to verify |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content gone with no replacement | A festive promotion page after the sale ended | Report it as not found or gone | 404 or 410 | Request the URL and check the status code in the header |
| Content moved or replaced | A clinic's service page renamed in a site revamp | Redirect to the new address | 301 | URL Inspection tool in Search Console |
| Real page flagged as a soft 404 | A page whose content loads from a blocked script | Clear the rendering blockers: blocked or failing resources, too many resources, server errors, slow or heavy files | 200, with the content in view | URL Inspection, View tested page, to see the rendered page and code |

### How do single-page apps avoid soft 404s?

**Single-page apps that route in the browser seldom give the server a chance to send a proper code, so Google recommends a JavaScript redirect to an address that returns a real 404, such as /not-found, or a robots noindex tag added to the error view.** Google's JavaScript [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation) basics page explains both methods with sample code ([Google Search Central, JavaScript SEO basics](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/javascript/javascript-seo-basics)).

## How Do You Find 404 Errors on Your Site?

**Check four sources: Search Console for what Google met, a crawler for broken internal links, a backlink tool for dead pages that other sites link to, and server logs for anything the reports miss.**

1. **Search Console Page indexing report.** "Not found (404)" and "Soft 404" list the addresses Google tried to index without success, each with example URLs.
2. **URL Inspection tool.** One address at a time: the status code Google saw, the page as Google rendered it and how Google discovered it.
3. **A site crawler.** Tools such as Screaming Frog walk the site like a search engine and flag every link returning a 4xx code, with the page that contains it.
4. **A backlink tool.** Ahrefs and comparable tools show external links that end on 404 addresses, revealing which dead pages still carry links.
5. **Server logs.** Access logs capture each 404 request from visitors and bots, including addresses no report lists.

## How Do You Fix a 404 Error?

**Sort each broken URL by what happened to its content: redirect it when it moved or has a close replacement, correct the link when your own link is wrong, and leave the 404 or 410 when nothing replaces it.** Search Console Help also recommends redirecting frequent misspellings of a real URL to that page.

| What happened | Singapore example | Action | Status code | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The content moved | /services/seo-audit.html became /services/seo-audit/ | Redirect the old URL to the new one | 301 | Visitors and Google reach the new page; a 301 tells Google strongly which page to show |
| A close equivalent replaced it | Last year's package page replaced by this year's | Redirect to the replacement | 301 | The old address still serves the visitor |
| Your own link has a typo | A footer link to /abuot-us/ | Correct the link where it sits | None after correction | A redirect only patches a link you control |
| Your sitemap lists a dead address | A removed article still in sitemap.xml | Delete the entry from the sitemap | None after correction | A sitemap carries only live pages you want indexed |
| A popular misspelling of a real URL | /enquiry/ typed as /inquiry/ | Redirect the misspelling | 301 | Visitors who mistype still arrive |
| The content is gone with no replacement | A past seminar registration page | Keep the 404 or return a 410 | 404 or 410 | The proper reply for removed content; a redirect to the home page turns it into a soft 404 |

*Which repair suits which 404.*

### Which redirect fits each move?

**Use a server-side 301 or 308 for a move you mean to keep, and a 302 or 307 only for a short-lived change.** Google handles 301 and 308 as permanent, showing the new address in search results, and 302, 303 and 307 as temporary, keeping the old address in results ([Google Search Central, Redirects and Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/301-redirects)). Bing's guidelines draw the same line and keep 302 redirects for "very short-term changes (less than 2 days)" ([Bing Webmaster Guidelines](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a)).

### Why do redirect chains matter?

**Long redirect chains have a negative effect on crawling, Google's crawl budget guide warns, and Googlebot follows a maximum of 10 hops by default.** Every hop is another request between Google and the page you want indexed. Point each old URL straight at its final page, and update earlier redirects when a page moves again.

*[Sources: Google Search Central, October 2026 and others](https://aemorph.com/sources/#google-search-central-october-2026-and-others-redirects)*

## What Makes a Good Custom 404 Page?

**A strong custom 404 page says plainly that the page is missing, keeps your site's branding and menus, and offers clear next steps, while the server still returns the 404 code.** Google's advice for a useful 404 page comes down to four points ([Google Search Central, Troubleshoot crawling errors](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/troubleshoot-crawling-errors)):

1. **State that the page is missing** in a friendly tone.
2. **Keep the look and navigation** consistent with the rest of the site.
3. **Add links to your most popular pages** and the home page.
4. **Let visitors report the broken link.**

### What else helps visitors on a 404 page?

**A site search box, links to your main services or product categories and a contact or WhatsApp link turn a dead end into a way back in.** These suggestions come from Aemorph's 2024 guide and still apply: a shopper looking for a withdrawn product finds the current range, and a prospect looking for help reaches your team. Light brand humour works for some Singapore brands, as long as the message stays clear on a phone screen.

### Does the custom 404 page need a 404 status code?

**Yes: Google describes custom 404 pages as made only for people and useless to search engines, so the server returns a 404 code to keep them out of the index.** A well-designed error page that answers 200 is the soft 404 described above. Check the status code in the response header after each update to your CMS, theme or hosting, because the page on screen never reveals which code the server sent.

## Keep Broken URLs From Costing Your Singapore Site Visitors

**404s stay harmless when every page you want found returns 200, every moved page redirects in one hop and every removed page returns a real 404 or 410.** Look at the Page indexing report each month, crawl the site after every revamp or migration, and reclaim dead URLs that still carry links with one-to-one redirects. If you want an experienced team to manage this for your Singapore site, Aemorph's [technical SEO service](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/services/technical-seo/) crawls the site with Screaming Frog, lists status code faults, redirect chains and broken links, and specifies each fix at the template for your developers, who set the pace. The [SEO audit](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/services/seo-audit/) includes the same checks within a wider review, and the [on-page SEO audit guide](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/on-page-seo-audit/) explains the page-level checks that go with them. Aemorph's guide to [web design and development](https://aemorph.com/en-sg/guides/web-design-and-development/) sets out how to plan, build and launch a site with search built in.
