# Web Design and Development for Australian Businesses: Build a Site That Ranks and Sells

**For an Australian business, web design settles what each page shows and how visitors find their way through it, while web development writes the code that loads, secures and runs those pages, and both have to satisfy Google, Australian buyers and Australian law.** Ahrefs' Australian database records about 900 searches a month for "web design and development" and 8,100 for "website design". This guide sets out how the two jobs divide, what Google reads in a build, a seven-step build plan, disability access and privacy rules in Australia, speed and security targets, the advice to drop and how a sound site gets quoted in AI answers.

## What Is Web Design and Development?

**Design is the plan for a site's page layouts, menus, typefaces and colours, and development is the markup, styling, scripting and server logic that brings the plan to life in a browser.** The designer decides the order in which a buyer meets your offer, proof and enquiry form. The developer decides how quickly that page arrives, where form data goes and how payments are handled. Search requirements belong in both sets of decisions from the first sketch, since fixing a live site costs far more than planning it right. Aemorph's guide to [conversion rate optimisation](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/conversion-rate-optimisation/) covers measuring and raising the share of visits that become enquiries.

### What are the types of web development?

**Development work divides into the browser side, the server side and the platform layer, and an Australian website project usually needs all three.**

| Kind of work | Scope on the project | Typical tools | What it changes for Google | Usual role |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Front end | Pages, menus and forms in the browser | HTML, CSS, JavaScript | Whether text and links appear in the rendered page | Front-end developer |
| Back end | Hosting, databases, accounts and connected systems | Server code, databases, APIs | Response codes, redirects and server speed | Back-end developer |
| Full stack | Browser and server work handled by one person or team | Both stacks | A single owner for crawling, rendering and speed faults | Full-stack developer |
| Content management system | Templates staff edit without code | WordPress, Sitecore and others | Whether each page's title, headings and description are editable | CMS developer |
| Online store | Product catalogue, cart, checkout, payment | Ecommerce platforms, payment gateways | Category layout, duplicate URLs and product markup | Ecommerce developer |

## Web Design and Development in Australia: Devices, Disability Access and Privacy

**Australian traffic splits almost evenly between phones and computers, so an Australian build serves both layouts in full, meets the disability access standard the Australian Human Rights Commission points to and handles enquiry data under the Australian Privacy Principles.** StatCounter recorded 48.57% of Australian web traffic on mobile and 48.48% on desktop in September 2026, with Google holding 87.9% of search engine market share.

| Measure | Figure | Market | Period | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Web traffic on mobile | 48.57% | Australia | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Web traffic on desktop | 48.48% | Australia | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Google share of search | 87.9% | Australia | September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Searches for "website design" | 8,100 a month | Australia | October 2026 | Ahrefs |
| Searches for "web development" | 2,000 a month | Australia | October 2026 | Ahrefs |
| Searches for "web design and development" | 900 a month | Australia | October 2026 | Ahrefs |

**The Australian Human Rights Commission's guidelines on equal access to digital goods and services, dated April 2025, list websites among the digital products they cover, set out how organisations meet their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and treat WCAG as the applicable international standard.** The Commission asks organisations to meet the latest published version of WCAG and describes its guidelines as the minimum to aim for. The guidelines are not legally binding, and following them does not by itself protect a business from a finding of unlawful discrimination.

**The Privacy Act covers organisations with an annual turnover of more than A$3 million and some smaller businesses, including health service providers, and a covered business keeps a clearly expressed and up-to-date privacy policy and gives a collection notice beside each enquiry form.** The [Australian Privacy Principles guide](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/australian-privacy-principles-marketing/) covers the rules for forms, policies and tracking pixels. This is general information, not legal advice.

## What Does Google Need From a Website Build?

**Google ranks the version of your site its smartphone crawler sees, follows links written as standard HTML anchors and weighs page experience, so an Australian build passes when the phone layout holds every word of the desktop one and each page loads quickly over HTTPS.** Google renders JavaScript in a separate step after crawling, which is why it calls server-side rendering or pre-rendering a great idea for content that has to be found.

| What Google checks | Google's documentation | How your build passes | Typical failure | How to test it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Phone version | Indexing and ranking use the mobile version | Identical copy, headings and markup on phone and desktop | Sections dropped from the phone layout | URL Inspection in Search Console |
| Links | Links count when written as `<a>` elements with `href` | Menus and in-page links coded as plain HTML links | Navigation that only works through scripts | Rendered HTML of each template |
| Script-built pages | Crawl, then render, then index | Key content rendered on the server or pre-rendered | Key copy absent from Google's rendered HTML because scripts are blocked, fail or wait for a click | URL Inspection in Search Console |
| Security | Page experience asks whether pages are served securely | Every page on HTTPS, HTTP redirected | Insecure assets, lapsed certificates | Browser address bar and security panel |
| Page experience | [Core Web Vitals](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/core-web-vitals/) feed Google's ranking systems | Light templates and stable layouts | Oversized images and heavy scripts | Core Web Vitals report in Search Console |

### Does responsive design matter for SEO?

**Google's recommended pattern is responsive web design, where one URL serves every screen and the layout adjusts, because it is the simplest to build and keep up and it keeps phone and desktop content identical.** Separate mobile URLs and device-based serving remain supported, yet each creates a second copy to keep in step. With Australian traffic split almost half and half, a responsive site avoids the gap at its source.

## How Do You Plan and Build a Website, Step by Step?

**An Australian site keeps its search traffic through a rebuild when the project runs through seven stages, each with the search requirements set before design starts.**

1. **Collect buyer questions.** Pull them from sales calls, enquiry emails and Search Console queries; each becomes a page or a section.
2. **Map sections and URLs.** Group the questions, give every page a short readable address and keep key pages a few clicks from the homepage.
3. **Write copy first.** Design around the real headings, tables and calls to action, so nothing important gets squeezed off a phone screen.
4. **Sketch the phone layout first.** Google indexes the mobile version, so the phone layout is the version it reads. Aemorph's guide to [mobile SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/mobile-seo/) covers mobile-first indexing and the checks a phone layout needs.
5. **Put search into the templates.** Every template gets an editable title and description, one H1, plain HTML links, alt text fields and structured data matching what visitors see.
6. **Test on staging.** Check rendered HTML, Core Web Vitals, colour contrast and keyboard use before the public sees the site.
7. **Go live with redirects, then check.** Point every old URL at its nearest new page, submit the XML sitemap and watch Search Console in the weeks that follow. Aemorph's guide to [404 errors](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/404-errors/) sets out which status code or redirect each missing page needs.

### How do you redesign a website without losing rankings?

**Google treats a redesign that changes URLs as a site move and asks for permanent server-side redirects from old to new addresses, kept for at least a year, with temporary ranking movement expected while it reprocesses the site.** Planning starts weeks out, with every current URL, the pages holding links and visits, and a map from each to its replacement. Aemorph writes that redirect map and the on-page set-up for your developers or IT vendor, then verifies the work either side of launch.

## What Makes a Website Accessible?

**An accessible site is one that people with disabilities read, navigate and use with their own assistive tools, and WCAG 2.2, a W3C Recommendation since 5 October 2023, is the version the Commission's guidance points Australian organisations towards as the latest published.** WCAG 2.2 adds nine success criteria to WCAG 2.1, and Level AA is the target most policies name.

| Check | WCAG 2.2 criterion | Requirement | Build step | Benefit for search |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Colour contrast | 1.4.3, Level AA | 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text | Contrast tested on the design tokens before sign-off | Text stays legible in every snippet |
| Image descriptions | 1.1.1, Level A | Text alternative for each meaningful image | Alt text written for each image in context | Google Images uses alt text |
| Keyboard use | 2.1.1, Level A | All functions work without a mouse | Native HTML links, buttons and form fields | Native links are crawlable too |
| Page structure | 1.3.1, Level A | Structure carried in the code | One H1 with H2 and H3 in order | Clean sections for snippets and AI answers |
| Visible focus | 2.4.7, Level AA | Keyboard focus is visible | A focus style on every interactive element | Usability only |

## How Fast and Secure Does a Website Need to Be?

**Google's good-experience targets are a Largest Contentful Paint inside 2.5 seconds, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or under and a Cumulative Layout Shift no higher than 0.1, read at the 75th percentile of page loads on phones and computers.** Core Web Vitals feed Google's ranking systems, though strong scores alone do not secure a top position. Google's page experience questions add secure serving, a sound phone display, no intrusive interstitials and main content that stands apart from the rest.

| Vital | What it tracks | Target | Usual culprit | Build fix |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LCP | Time to show the main content | 2.5 seconds or faster | Oversized banner images, a slow host | Compressed images, caching, quicker hosting |
| INP | Delay after a tap, click or key press | 200 milliseconds or under | Script-heavy pages and third-party tags | Fewer scripts, long tasks broken up |
| CLS | Movement of content as the page loads | 0.1 or lower | Images and embeds with no reserved space | Fixed dimensions on images and slots |

### Does a website still need an SSL certificate?

**Your site needs HTTPS, which runs on Transport Layer Security (TLS) today; SSL is retired, and the IETF deprecated SSL 3.0 in June 2015 for being insufficiently secure.** Hosts and certificate sellers still say "SSL certificate" for the TLS certificate a site installs. The things that count are HTTPS on every page, HTTP addresses forwarded to it and a certificate renewed before it lapses.

## Which Web Design Advice Is Out of Date?

**Some website rules still circulating in Australia, including parts of this page's earlier versions, rest on retired Google tools or on figures with no primary source.** Each row below is checked against Google, the IETF or Aemorph's current services.

| Old advice | Current position | Checked against | Replacement practice | Outcome |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Get "SSL certifications" for security | SSL 3.0 was deprecated as insufficiently secure; HTTPS uses TLS | IETF RFC 7568, June 2015 | HTTPS on every page with a current TLS certificate | Corrected |
| Pass Google's Mobile-Friendly Test | The tool was retired in December 2023 | Google Search Central | Confirm the phone version holds the full desktop content | Corrected |
| A few seconds' delay lifts bounce rates and costs revenue | No primary source; Google publishes Core Web Vitals targets | web.dev, Web Vitals | Hit LCP, INP and CLS targets at the 75th percentile | Removed |
| Tune keyword density and distribution | Keyword stuffing breaches Google's spam policies; language matching relates pages to queries | Google [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation) Starter Guide | Write plainly and answer the full question | Removed |
| Position one takes about 33% of organic traffic | No primary source | None found | Use your own Search Console figures | Removed |
| Aemorph website prices and maintenance plans | Aemorph no longer builds or maintains websites | Aemorph services, October 2026 | Give your developer the requirements in this guide | Removed |

## How Does a Website Get Cited in AI Answers?

**Any page Google indexes and shows with a snippet qualifies as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google says it needs no extra technical work beyond normal SEO practice.** That practice includes crawlable internal links, key information in text and structured data that matches the visible page, all of which a sound build already provides. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity also cite pages that state facts plainly with their sources. [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/geo/) earns those citations, and [AEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/aeo/) handles Google's answer surfaces.

### Where does Aemorph fit in a website project?

**Aemorph does not design or build websites: it writes the search specification, redirect map and on-page set-up your developers or IT vendor put in place, then checks the result before and after launch.** For paid search, Aemorph builds dedicated campaign landing pages itself so campaigns launch and change without a website release. Audits and migrations sit under [technical SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/technical-seo/), and campaign landing pages under [SEM](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/sem/).

> Aemorph started work in September 2019. The store's database and product tables carried duplicate categories and subcategories, plus repeating keyword and product pages. Aemorph advised restructuring the database and product tables to consolidate them, with every old URL redirected to its correct new page, alongside the store's move from WordPress to Magento: 2,000+ pages from October 2019 to March 2020, six months in all. Monthly organic visits rose from 3,883 in September 2019 to 12,172 in October 2020, up 213%. [Read the Remarkable Furniture case study](https://aemorph.com/en-au/case-studies/remarkable-furniture/)

## Build an Australian Website That Ranks, Sells and Gets Cited

**An Australian website wins search traffic when its design starts from buyer questions, its code lets Google crawl and render every page, and it meets WCAG, privacy, speed and security standards.** Map the structure before the design, write the copy before the layout, build search into each template, test on staging and redirect every old URL that moves. Aemorph writes those requirements for your developers, verifies the build and tracks how the site ranks in Google and where AI chats cite it. Aemorph's guides to [how search engines work](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/how-search-engines-work/) and [SEO copywriting](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/seo-copywriting/) explain how Google crawls, renders, indexes and ranks pages, and how to write page copy that ranks and persuades.
