# Mobile SEO for Australian Businesses: Getting the Phone Version Indexed, Usable and Cited

**For an Australian website, mobile [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation) means treating the phone version as the real website, because Google now builds its index from what its smartphone crawler sees and nearly half of Australian page views come from mobile devices.** StatCounter put mobile at 48.57% of Australian page views in September 2026, just ahead of desktop at 48.48%. Google finished moving every site to its smartphone crawler after 5 July 2024, and a site whose content does not load on a phone at all is now outside the index. This guide covers what the smartphone crawler checks, which elements have to agree across phone and desktop, how to test without Google's retired mobile tools, where pop-ups and AMP stand, and how the phone version reaches AI Overviews, AI Mode and the AI chats Australians use.

## What Is Mobile SEO for an Australian Website?

**Mobile SEO covers every check that keeps the phone version of a page equal to the desktop version in text, links, markup and metadata, quick to load over a mobile network, and easy to use with a fingertip.** Switching to a responsive theme solves the layout and little else. Australian sites commonly still collapse product details into accordions that load on tap, send 3,000-pixel hero images to handsets, or open a full-screen discount offer the moment a visitor lands, and Google indexes the page with every one of those faults in place.

| Area | What gets checked | Why Google cares | Where to check it | Related guide |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content parity | Body text, headings and internal links match on phone and desktop | Text absent from the phone version is absent from the index | Search Console URL Inspection, live test | [Technical SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/technical-seo/) |
| Metadata and markup | Title, meta description, robots meta tags and JSON-LD match | Differences change what gets indexed and displayed | Page source on both versions | [Schema markup errors](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/schema-markup-errors-diagnostic/) |
| Layout | A viewport tag, legible text and finger-sized tap targets | With no viewport tag, a phone draws the page at desktop width | Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools | [On-page SEO audit](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/on-page-seo-audit/) |

| Media | Identical image URLs and one steady video URL on both versions | Image addresses that change by device lose image traffic | URL comparison across both versions | [Image SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/image-seo/) |
| Interruptions | Pop-ups, interstitials and full-screen offers | A full-page overlay hides the content from visitors and crawlers | A test load on a real handset | [On-page SEO audit](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/on-page-seo-audit/) |

## How Australians Search on Phones

**Australian search runs close to evenly across phones and desktops, on Google first and Bing second, so an Australian site needs a phone version that holds up on its own, with no desktop page to fall back on.** The figures below come from StatCounter's September 2026 data and Ahrefs' Australian keyword database.

| Measure | Figure | Period | Source | What it means for a site |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mobile share of page views | 48.57% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Close to half of page views come from a phone |
| Desktop share of page views | 48.48% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Desktop still carries the other half, so both versions get used |
| Google share of search | 87.9% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Google's smartphone crawler decides most search visibility |
| Bing share of search | 9.17% | September 2026 | StatCounter | Bing Webmaster Tools is worth adding beside Search Console |
| Searches for "mobile seo" | 150 a month | October 2026 | Ahrefs | Australian demand for the topic itself, at low difficulty |

*Australian device and search engine share, StatCounter, September 2026; search volume, Ahrefs Australian database, October 2026.*

Google switched on AI Overviews across Australia on 29 October 2024 and launched AI Mode in Australia on 8 October 2025, so the phone version of a page now feeds an AI answer as well as a blue link. A national survey by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, published in November 2025, found that 45.6% of Australian adults had recently used a generative AI tool.

## How Does Mobile-First Indexing Work in Australia?

**Mobile-first indexing is Google's practice of fetching each page with Googlebot Smartphone and then indexing and ranking what that fetch returns, and since 5 July 2024 it covers every site, including every Australian one.** In June 2024 Google said nearly every site was already crawled by the smartphone crawler, then named 5 July 2024 as the switch-over date for the last desktop-crawled sites, after which any content that never loads on a phone stopped being indexable. A desktop Googlebot visit in an Australian server log is not a reversal: Google still sends the desktop crawler for a handful of features, such as product listings and Google for Jobs. Aemorph's guide to [how search engines work](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/how-search-engines-work/) explains how Google crawls, renders, indexes and ranks pages.

Google names three set-ups for serving phones and backs one:

| Set-up | What a phone receives | Address structure | Google's stance | Risk for an Australian site |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Responsive design | One set of HTML at one address for all devices | A single URL per page | The recommended pattern, simplest to build and maintain | Accordions and tabs that load only on tap |
| Dynamic serving | Device-specific HTML at one address | A single URL per page | One of the three listed set-ups, not the recommended one | Phone HTML that leaves out desktop content |
| Separate URLs | Device-specific HTML at separate addresses, often an m. subdomain | Two URLs per page | One of the three listed set-ups, not the recommended one | Each m. page drifting from its desktop twin in content or markup |

*Set-ups from Google's mobile-first indexing best practices.*

### What happens to a site that only works on desktop?

**A site that never loads its content on a phone has dropped out of what Google indexes, which leaves it nothing to rank.** A site that loads on phones with a cut-down version is ranked on the cut-down version. The repair is to put the missing material back on the phone version; extra desktop content changes nothing.

## What Has to Match Between Mobile and Desktop Pages?

**Primary content, headings, structured data, the title, the meta description and the robots meta tags all have to agree between the phone version and the desktop version, since Google indexes the phone version alone.** Google's mobile-first indexing page spells out each one, plus rules on lazy loading, images and video. Responsive sites mostly agree by design; trouble starts where a theme, plugin or script handles phones on its own path.

| Element | What Google asks for | Typical Australian site fault | Where to verify | Repair |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Primary content | The same content on the phone version as on desktop | Service descriptions shortened for small screens | Rendered text of both versions | Reinstate the text and use layout to save space |
| Headings | The same clear, meaningful headings | Section headings swapped for icons on phones | Heading outline of both versions | Keep heading text visible on phones |
| Structured data | Identical structured data on both | LocalBusiness or Product markup missing from the phone template | Rich Results Test on the phone version | Copy the JSON-LD into the phone template |
| Title and meta description | Equivalent on both versions | A mobile theme writing its own shorter titles | Source code on both versions | One title and one description per page |
| Robots meta tags | Identical robots meta tags on both | A noindex left in a staging phone template | URL Inspection | Align the tags |
| Lazy loading | No primary content loaded on interaction | Product specifications that appear only after a tap | Rendered HTML in the live test | Load primary content up front |
| Images | Good quality, identical image URLs on both | Separate image paths for handsets | Image URL comparison | One set of image URLs |
| Video | One stable URL, easy to find on a phone | A video address regenerated on each load | Two loads compared | A fixed video URL |

## How Do You Test Phone Pages Without Google's Old Mobile Tools?

**Search Console's Mobile Usability report, the Mobile-Friendly Test and its API all closed on 1 December 2023, so testing a phone version now means the URL Inspection live test, Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools.** Google said at the time that mobile usability stays critical for users and stays in its page experience guidance; it retired the tools, not the standard, and pointed to Lighthouse among the replacements.

| Check | Tool | What it reveals | Target | Reference |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rendered phone page | URL Inspection live test in Search Console | The page as Google fetches and renders it | Primary text and links present in the rendered HTML | Search Console Help |
| Viewport | Lighthouse | Whether a viewport meta tag is set | `width=device-width, initial-scale=1` | Chrome for Developers |
| Legible text | Chrome DevTools device mode | Text readable without pinch-zoom | The retired Lighthouse audit flagged pages with 40% or more of text below 12 CSS pixels | Chrome for Developers |
| Tap targets | Chrome DevTools device mode | Buttons and links sized for a finger | 24 by 24 CSS pixels or more, WCAG 2.2 criterion 2.5.8 (Level AA), with exceptions such as adequate spacing and inline links | W3C |
| Speed | PageSpeed Insights | Core Web Vitals from real phone visits | LCP 2.5 seconds or less, INP 200 milliseconds or less, CLS 0.1 or less, 75th percentile | web.dev |

*Phone page tests replacing Google's retired tools, October 2026.*

Tap target size also has an accessibility side in Australia. The Australian Human Rights Commission's April 2025 guidelines on equal access to digital goods and services point to WCAG as the applicable international standard for web accessibility under the Disability Discrimination Act, and they state that the guidelines are not legally binding. A missing viewport tag makes a phone draw the page at desktop width and shrink it, and Lighthouse 13 dropped the font size audit, so treat 12 pixels as a manual benchmark. Core Web Vitals depth sits with Aemorph's [technical SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/technical-seo/) work.

## Do Pop-Ups Hurt Mobile SEO in Australia?

**Google asks sites to avoid interstitials that cover the whole page and to use banners that occupy a small slice of the screen, because intrusive dialogs get between people, crawlers and the content, and Google ties them to poor search performance.** Google also advises against sending visitors to a separate page to collect consent or input. Interstitials a site has to show by law, such as an age check on a gambling site, are accepted, and the same slim banners suit a newsletter prompt or a sale notice.

| Pop-up type | Australian example | Google's guidance | What a phone visitor sees | Alternative |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Full-page interstitial | A 10% off overlay that covers a product page on arrival | Avoid covering the entire page | Nothing but the offer until it is closed | A slim banner at the top or bottom |
| Redirect for consent | A separate page asking for details before the content | Avoid redirecting users for consent or input | The content one step further away | An inline banner on the page |
| Legally required gate | An age check on an online wagering site | Accepted | Shown because the law requires it | Keep it to what the law requires |
| Slim banner | A strip using a small share of the screen | Recommended | The content from the first load | The same strip for sign-ups and notices |

*Pop-up patterns from Google's guidance on intrusive interstitials and dialogs, last updated December 2025.*

### Does a mobile-friendly site rank higher?

**Google lists no single page experience signal; its core ranking systems weigh a range of signals that line up with overall page experience, and mobile usability remains in that guidance.** Core Web Vitals are used by Google's ranking systems, and Google adds that good report results guarantee no top position. A phone-friendly page ranks on the strength of the content Google indexes from it, with page experience counted alongside many other factors.

## Do Australian Sites Still Need AMP?

**No: Google indexes AMP pages the same way as other pages, and since its April 2021 page experience announcement any page meeting Google News policies qualifies for the Top Stories carousel without AMP.** Google dropped the AMP badge from results in that same announcement, and its AMP documentation now notes that desktop AMP receives no search-specific features. Every general Google best practice applies to AMP pages as well, so running AMP means maintaining two copies of each page for no ranking gain Google has documented. For an Australian site starting fresh, Aemorph recommends one fast responsive page per URL over a parallel AMP build.

## How Does the Phone Version Reach AI Answers?

**Google builds its index from the phone version of a page, so a complete phone version is what Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on and link to in Australia, while ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity fetch pages through crawlers their providers document one by one.** [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), being cited inside the AI chats, leads: OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026. A disallowed OAI-SearchBot keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers apart from navigational links, according to OpenAI; a blocked Claude-SearchBot stops Anthropic indexing the content for search, which Anthropic says lowers visibility in Claude's search results; and PerplexityBot is the crawler Perplexity uses to surface and link sites. Visits a user requests run on separate agents: OpenAI says robots.txt rules are not guaranteed to apply to ChatGPT-User, and Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt. Stating each core fact in one plain sentence of page text hands a model a quotable line, the starting point of Aemorph's [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/geo/) work.

[AEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation) covers Google's answer surfaces. Google's AI features documentation says a page shows as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode when it is indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements, and with indexing now mobile-first, anything left off the phone version is left out of what these features read. Google reported in July 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users. The [AEO guide](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/aeo/) covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured snippets.

| AI surface | Operator | Route to your page | What the page needs | Discipline |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI | OAI-SearchBot | Crawler allowed in robots.txt; facts in plain page text | GEO |
| Claude | Anthropic | Claude-SearchBot | Crawler allowed in robots.txt; facts in plain page text | GEO |
| Perplexity | Perplexity | PerplexityBot | Crawler allowed in robots.txt; facts in plain page text | GEO |
| AI Overviews | Google, live in Australia since 29 October 2024 | Google's mobile-first index | Indexed phone version eligible for a snippet | AEO |
| AI Mode | Google, live in Australia since 8 October 2025 | Google's mobile-first index, with related searches across subtopics | Indexed phone version eligible for a snippet | AEO |

## Fix the Mobile Page First on Australian Sites

**An Australian site whose phone pages hold the full desktop content, metadata and markup, render without a tap, load quickly on a mobile network and keep full-page offers out of the way gives Google one complete version to index, and that version then feeds Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode while keeping every fact in view of the crawlers the AI chats Australian buyers use send.** Aemorph's [technical SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/technical-seo/) audit checks phone and desktop parity with Lighthouse, Screaming Frog and the Google and Bing webmaster tools. The [SEO checklist](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/seo-checklist/) runs the mobile check alongside the rest of an audit. Your developers make the changes from Aemorph's specification, and Aemorph confirms each one. The phone version then works inside the [LLM Influencer System](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#llm-influencer-system), where [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/geo/) takes the same facts into AI chats.
