# What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)? An Australian Guide to Getting Cited Inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity

**[GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), Generative Engine Optimisation, earns your Australian business citations and mentions inside the answers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity write when a buyer asks for a recommendation in your category.** An Australian buyer who asks a chat for a shortlist reads a written reply, not a page of links. What counts inside that reply is whether the model names your business at all, and whether the description it gives is accurate. ChatGPT alone had more than 800 million weekly users worldwide by October 2025 ([OpenAI's DevDay 2025 user figure](https://openai.com/devday/)).

## What GEO Actually Optimises For in Australia

**GEO builds your presence across the sources large language models read, not only your website, because a chat reply draws on a wide read of the web and the businesses it names make an Australian buyer's shortlist.** A chat assembles its reply from what the model learned about a category and, where web search is on, from the pages it retrieves. A polished website does not protect a business whose signals elsewhere are thin or contradictory.

Aemorph's GEO method rests on three pieces of work. A gap in any one raises the risk that a chat describes your business vaguely, describes it wrongly or leaves it off the list:

- **Verified facts:** one unambiguous record of what your business is, what it does and where in Australia it serves, so the model has a single correct account to draw on.
- **Independent reinforcement:** that record repeated on outside sources, such as Australian directories and trade press, so voices other than yours confirm it.
- **Alignment:** identical facts wherever the model meets them, so no source contradicts another.

### What is GEO for an Australian business?

**For an Australian business, Generative Engine Optimisation is the work of reinforcing your entity, its facts, its category and its credibility, across the sources a large language model reads and synthesises, so the AI chats name you when a buyer asks for a recommendation.** GEO pairs accurate, accessible website content with independent corroboration, so a large share of the work happens away from your own domain.

In United States retail, Adobe Analytics recorded a 1,200% rise in traffic from generative-AI sources in February 2025 against July 2024 ([Adobe Analytics 2025 generative-AI retail traffic data](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/03/17/adobe-analytics-traffic-to-us-retail-websites-from-generative-ai-sources-jumps-1200-percent)). The figure covers US retail only, not Australian traffic.

| Figure | Value | What it measures | Scope | Date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT weekly users | More than 800 million | People using ChatGPT each week | Global | October 2025 | OpenAI, DevDay 2025 |
| Generative-AI retail traffic growth | +1,200% | Visits to retail websites from generative-AI sources | US retail, over 1 trillion site visits analysed | February 2025 against July 2024 | Adobe Analytics, 2025 |

## GEO vs AEO: The Distinction That Actually Matters for Australian Businesses

**GEO and AEO are often treated as one discipline, and that confusion moves budget away from the answers your Australian buyers read.** GEO targets the standalone AI chats: a buyer opens a conversation and asks directly, with no results page beside the reply. [AEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation), Answer Engine Optimisation, gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers, the answers a search engine or voice assistant gives directly. Google switched AI Overviews on across Australia on 29 October 2024. [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), search engine optimisation, earns the ranked links in Google and Bing beneath both.

The two disciplines share their groundwork, verified facts, structured content and outside corroboration, yet the buyer meets each one differently. A Google AI Overview places brand mentions and source links within or alongside a summary on the results page. GEO targets the citation or recommendation inside a standalone chat conversation, and that conversational recommendation is where GEO puts its effort.

| Discipline | Parent category | Surface | Engines | Where the citation sits | Where the work happens |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| GEO | AI answer surfaces | Chat answers and recommendations | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | Inside the conversational answer | Across independent sources as well as the business's own pages |
| AEO | AI answer surfaces | AI Overviews, featured snippets and answer boxes, voice search answers | Google; voice assistants | Inside Google's answer above the results, or in a spoken answer | On-site passages and structured data, backed by verified facts |
| SEO | Organic search | Ranked results | Google's and Bing's search indexes | A ranked link a person clicks | On the business's own pages, plus backlinks |
| Content marketing | Owned media | Articles, guides, video, email | Read by search engines, AI answer surfaces and chats | Not a citation surface itself; it supplies the material others cite | The business's own channels |

*GEO among its peers in Australian search.*

### What is AEO and GEO in Australia?

**Together, GEO and AEO make up AI-visibility work: GEO covers the standalone AI chats, and AEO covers Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers.** Aemorph leads with GEO because a chat reply often names a shortlist with no alternative links beside it; both surfaces matter, and work on one reinforces the other. In a forecast published in February 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume falls 25% by 2026 as users move queries to AI chatbots and other virtual agents ([Gartner's 2024 search volume forecast](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-02-19-gartner-predicts-search-engine-volume-will-drop-25-percent-by-2026-due-to-ai-chatbots-and-other-virtual-agents)).

## GEO Gives Chat Assistants One Consistent Account of Your Australian Business

**GEO keeps your facts consistent across the sources a chat assistant learns from and retrieves, so the model has one clear account of your business to repeat to Australian buyers.** Each engine answers from what it has learned and retrieved about your business, and your website is one source among many. In Aemorph's working model, a shortlist request to ChatGPT or Perplexity runs in four steps, a simplification that varies by engine, product mode and query:

1. **Draws** on what the model learned about the category to find the businesses that fit the question.
2. **Retrieves** current pages where web search is switched on, your own pages among them.
3. **Names** the businesses those sources describe clearly and consistently.
4. **Omits**, or describes loosely, the businesses the sources describe vaguely or inconsistently.

A larger on-site content library is not, by itself, a GEO strategy; GEO also builds outside corroboration. Engineers use the term knowledge graph for a structured record of entities and the facts that connect them. The external layer of Aemorph's work is the [Resonance Network](https://aemorph.com/en-au/llm-influencer-system/resonance-network/), Aemorph's digital PR and third-party citations: the places that confirm your facts once your business has approved them.

## Australians Already Use Generative AI, While Google Still Leads Australian Search

**Close to half of Australian adults had recently used a generative AI tool by late 2025, and Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026, so Aemorph runs Australian GEO alongside search, not in place of it.** The figures come from the [ADM+S national survey](https://www.admscentre.org.au/australia-is-facing-an-ai-divide-new-national-survey-shows/) (45.6% of more than 5,500 adults) and [StatCounter](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/australia) (Bing 9.17%); the [National AI Centre](https://ai.gov.au/news-and-insights/blog/ai-adoption-insights-december-2025-february-2026) recorded some AI adoption at 43% of Australian SMEs.

| Measure | Figure | Market and date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Adults who recently used a generative AI tool | 45.6% | Australia, survey of more than 5,500 adults, published 5 November 2025 | ADM+S |
| SMEs reporting some AI adoption | 43% | Australia, December 2025 to February 2026 | National AI Centre |
| Google search engine market share | 87.9% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing search engine market share | 9.17% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Google AI Overviews | Rolled out Australia-wide | Australia, 29 October 2024 | Google Australia |

Bing's share is why Aemorph verifies Australian client sites in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.

## Getting GEO Right in Australia

**Build outside corroboration on purpose, rather than waiting for a strong website to surface inside a chat by itself, and your business gets named where Australian buyers ask.** Work through these steps in order:

1. **Ask the AI chats your Australian buyers' questions.** Record which businesses each chat names, which sources it shows and what it says about you.
2. **Write one approved set of facts.** State what your business is, what it does, who it serves and where in Australia, in the same words every time.
3. **Publish those facts on your own pages.** Give each fact a clear, accessible passage the model retrieves without guesswork.
4. **Align every outside description.** Correct the Australian directories, review profiles, association listings and press mentions that describe your business differently.
5. **Earn new independent mentions.** Place your facts on the third-party sources the chats retrieve for your category.
6. **Re-ask the same questions every month.** Log which chats now name you and which facts they still get wrong.

The first mistake Aemorph sees is treating GEO as an extension of on-site content marketing, when much of the work sits on third-party sources outside your domain.

The second is inconsistency: a business described one way on its own site, another way in a directory listing and a third way in a press mention. Conflicting facts push the business into the fourth step of the shortlist process: omitted, or described loosely.

| Mistake | What the business does | What the model does | Where the fix happens | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Treating GEO as on-site content | Publishes more pages on its own domain | Draws on outside sources as well, so on-site volume alone adds little corroboration | Off-site, across third-party sources | Build corroboration in the independent sources the model draws on |
| Inconsistent facts | Describes itself one way on its site, another in an Australian directory, a third in a press mention | Tends to hedge, or to omit the business | Everywhere the business is described | Align one verified set of facts across every source |
| Relying on the website alone | Assumes a polished site eventually surfaces inside a chat | Risks leaving the business unnamed when outside signals are weak | Off-site | Reinforce the verified record across independent sources |

*Three GEO mistakes Aemorph sees, and their fixes.*

For Australian clients, Aemorph's measured AI-answer evidence so far sits in Google's answers, not the chats: an AEO result built on the same groundwork of clear, consistent facts.

### Is it possible to control what ChatGPT says about an Australian business?

**No single action controls a chat's exact wording, but you influence what a chat says about your business by reinforcing one consistent, verified set of facts across the sources the model reads.** One dated observation for Aemorph's own brand: in a logged-out ChatGPT session on 4 August 2026, ChatGPT cited Aemorph 3 to 4 times and named it as a source across four vendor and agency queries, one of them "B2B lead generation agencies". None of the four queries was about the Australian market; it is one engine on one date.

The [Showstopper Sensor](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/30-day-showstopper-sensor-sprint/) (Sprint 1) is a 30-day showstopper-answer sprint for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. It publishes your approved answers to your [showstopper questions](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#showstopper-questions), the buyer questions that stop a purchase when AI answers them badly. Those answers form the first part of your [Brand Codex](https://aemorph.com/en-au/services/brand-codex/), the record of what the AI models know and say about your brand, built from facts your business approves.

**Bought on its own, the Showstopper Sensor (Sprint 1) carries the [Ground Truth Guarantee](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#ground-truth-guarantee).** The Ground Truth Guarantee: within 30 days of publishing, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer your showstopper questions with the facts in your Brand Codex. If they do not, Aemorph refunds 100% of your Sprint 1 fee and keeps working on the answers for a further 60 days, 90 days in total. Bought on its own, Sprint 1 starts with the free [strategic conversation](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#strategic-conversation); on the enterprise route it runs inside Attain or Apex after the audit and the Influencer Blueprint.
