# AI SEO Explained for Australia: What It Is and How It Differs From Traditional SEO

**[AI SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#ai-seo) is the practice of structuring your content and facts so Google and Bing search, Google's AI answers and AI chats such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all find, verify and cite your Australian business, wherever your buyers research.** It extends traditional SEO instead of replacing it, and it adds two newer outcomes to the ranked link: a place inside a generated answer, and a chat assistant naming your business. For Australian searchers those generated answers already sit on the results page, because Google rolled out AI Overviews Australia-wide on 29 October 2024. A chat answer arrives as prose, not a list of links, so being named differs from being found. Worldwide, ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users by October 2025 ([OpenAI's DevDay 2025 user figure](https://openai.com/devday/)).

## What Makes AI SEO Different From Traditional SEO in Australia

**Traditional SEO wins your page a ranked position that Australian buyers scan and click; AI SEO wins your business a place inside the answer they read, often with no click at all.** Both rest on one technical base, a crawlable, well-structured, fast-loading site, and part ways after that.

A traditional results page lists pages in ranked order. AI Overviews and the AI chats instead write an answer from what each engine has learned and retrieved about who you are, what you do and how credible sources describe you. Aemorph turns that account into your [verified record](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#verified-record), the single set of facts your business supplies and approves. A page ranks first for an Australian search and is still missing from the AI Overview above it, because ranking and citation measure different things.

### What is AI-powered search for an Australian searcher?

**AI-powered search is any search experience where a large language model writes or assembles the answer instead of listing ranked links.** For Australian searchers that label now covers Google's AI Overviews, Google's AI Mode, which began rolling out in Australia in English on 8 October 2025 ([Google Australia, AI Mode announcement](https://blog.google/intl/en-au/products/explore-get-answers/ai-mode-in-australia/)), Microsoft's Bing and Copilot experiences, and the standalone AI chats. Each reads your online presence differently from a traditional crawler.

Adobe Analytics recorded a 1,200% rise in traffic to US retail websites from generative-AI sources in February 2025 against July 2024 ([Adobe Analytics 2025 generative-AI retail traffic data](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/03/17/adobe-analytics-traffic-to-us-retail-websites-from-generative-ai-sources-jumps-1200-percent)). It is United States data and says nothing on its own about Australian retail.

| Figure | Value | What it measures | Scope | Date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT weekly users | More than 800 million | People using ChatGPT each week | Global | October 2025 | OpenAI, DevDay 2025 |
| Generative-AI retail traffic growth | +1,200% | Visits to retail websites from generative-AI sources | US retail, over 1 trillion site visits analysed | February 2025 against July 2024 | Adobe Analytics, 2025 |

## How AI Is Changing the Way SEO Works in Australia

**AI adds two citation layers on top of the ranking layer, so your Australian business now has to be findable, quotable and recommendable to reach the buyers who decide inside an answer.** SEO measures rankings, organic traffic and commercial outcomes. AI SEO adds checks on whether Google's answer quotes the business, whether the chat assistant names it, and whether the stated facts are right.

Each question has its own discipline. [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), search engine optimisation, earns your ranked place in the organic results of Google and Bing. [Answer Engine Optimisation](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation) (AEO) gets you quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers. [Generative Engine Optimisation](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation) (GEO) earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. GEO leads, because a chat answer often names a shortlist with no list of links beside it; AEO carries the same work onto Google's answer surfaces.

| Layer | Parent category | Surfaces | Engines | What success looks like | What it reads |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SEO | Organic search | Ranked links in the organic results | Google's and Bing's search indexes | A page-one ranking an Australian buyer clicks | The crawled, indexed pages of the site |
| AEO | AI answer surfaces | AI Overviews, featured snippets and answer boxes, voice search answers | Google answer surfaces and voice assistants | The business accurately represented in an answer surface or voice response | Extractable passages and the business's verified facts |
| GEO | AI answer surfaces | Chat answers and recommendations | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | The business named correctly in the chat answer | The business's facts, corroborated by independent sources |

*The three layers of AI SEO for an Australian business.*

### How has AI changed the way SEO works in Australia?

**AI has made citation and recommendation success measures alongside ranking, so an Australian business adds two visibility checks to the rankings it already tracks:**

- **Ranks:** your position in the traditional results of Google and Bing, where a buyer scans and clicks. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report it.
- **Gets cited:** whether Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers quote your pages. Run each priority question in Google from Australia and note the sources the answer shows, then put the same questions to the voice assistants you target and record their answers and any source they credit.
- **Gets recommended:** whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your business when an Australian buyer asks for a shortlist. Put the questions your buyers ask to each chat and note who it names and what it says about you.

## AI Search in Australia: Google, Bing, AI Overviews and AI Mode

**Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026 and Bing 9.17% ([StatCounter, Australia](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/australia)), and Google now shows AI Overviews and AI Mode to Australian searchers, so AI SEO for an Australian business covers two search engines, Google's AI answers and the AI chats.**

| Measure | Figure | Market and date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google share of search engine market | 87.9% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Bing share of search engine market | 9.17% | Australia, September 2026 | StatCounter |
| Google AI Overviews | Rolled out Australia-wide | Australia, 29 October 2024 | Google Australia |
| Google AI Mode | Rollout began, in English | Australia, 8 October 2025 | Google Australia |
| Adults who recently used a generative AI tool | 45.6% | Australia, survey of more than 5,500 adults, published 5 November 2025 | ADM+S |
| SMEs reporting some AI adoption | 43% | Australia, December 2025 to February 2026 | [National AI Centre](https://www.ai.gov.au/news-and-insights/blog/ai-adoption-insights-december-2025-february-2026) |

**Bing's guidelines state that the SEO practices supporting its crawling and indexing also support eligibility for AI-generated experiences, grounding results and citations in Bing and Copilot ([Bing Webmaster Guidelines](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a)).** Aemorph verifies client sites in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console. ## The Foundation All Three Layers Share in Australia

**All three layers draw on one foundation, accurate and consistent facts about your business on your own pages and in the independent sources that describe you, so one piece of work serves your rankings and your AI answers together.** Each engine answers from many sources, and your website is only one of them. In Aemorph's working model, a simplification that varies by engine, product mode and query, a buyer's question runs through four steps:

1. **Draws** on what the model has learned about the category, and on the sources it retrieves where web search is switched on.
2. **Weighs** how consistently those sources describe each business.
3. **Names** the businesses the sources describe clearly and consistently.
4. **Omits**, or describes loosely, the businesses the sources describe vaguely or inconsistently.

Volume alone does not earn visibility there: accurate facts, relevant pages and independent corroboration come first. AI SEO builds and checks your facts once, so the same account serves Google and Bing search, Google's AI answers and the AI chats, instead of three disconnected efforts.

Aemorph measures the SEO and AEO layers of that foundation for Australian clients. These results come from the same team and SEO discipline the entity-first method grew from; they are organic SEO results and Google AI Overview citations.

## Getting AI SEO Right in Australia

**AI SEO works as one foundation, not three projects on three timelines, so each piece of work you fund serves your Google and Bing rankings and your AI answers at once.** Work in this order:

1. **List your buyers' questions.** Write down the questions Australian buyers ask before they shortlist a supplier in your category in search and in the AI chats, in their own words. Grouped by topic, these form a [prompt cluster](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#prompt-cluster).
2. **Check what each surface says today.** Run every question in Google, Bing and each AI chat, and note whether your business ranks, gets cited or gets named, and whether the stated facts are right.
3. **Fix the technical foundation.** Make your site crawlable, well structured and fast loading, and verify it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so every layer has pages it reads.
4. **Write one approved set of facts.** Record what your business is, what it does, who it serves and where in Australia it operates, and use the same facts on every page. In regulated sectors those facts carry your own obligations: health practitioners advertise under the National Law and Ahpra's advertising guidelines, and ASIC publishes guidance on advertising financial products and services. See the [Ahpra and TGA advertising guide](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/ahpra-tga-advertising-rules/) and the [ASIC RG 234 guide](https://aemorph.com/en-au/guides/asic-rg-234-financial-advertising/).
5. **Answer each question in one clear passage.** Put a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the right page, so it is easy to identify, extract and cite; generated answers also paraphrase and combine sources.
6. **Get independent sources to confirm your facts.** Align the Australian directories, industry bodies, press and partner pages that describe you with your approved facts, because the engines weigh how consistently sources describe each business.
7. **Re-run the same questions every month.** Compare the results against your first check.

*General guidance, not legal advice.*

Four mistakes break this order, set out in the table below.

| Mistake | What the business does | Layer left thin | Risk | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bolting AI on afterwards | Fixes traditional SEO first, then adds AEO and GEO as an afterthought | AEO and GEO | A technically sound site with thin, unverified facts underneath | Build and verify your facts once, as the base for all three layers |
| Chasing AI Overviews only | Optimises for Google's answer surfaces and ignores the AI chats | GEO | The business risks going unnamed inside the AI chats | Treat GEO as the primary layer and extend the same work to AEO |
| Reporting on Google only | Tracks Google Search Console and leaves Bing unverified | SEO in Bing | Bing's indexing and query performance stay out of view | Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and report both search engines |
| Running three separate projects | Gives each surface its own team and timeline | All three | Facts drift between surfaces and the engines describe the business inconsistently | Run one foundation that serves search, AI answers and chats from a single record |
