# What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)? An Australian Guide to Getting Cited in Google's AI Overviews, Featured Snippets and Voice Answers

**[AEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#aeo-answer-engine-optimisation), Answer Engine Optimisation, gets your Australian business quoted in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers, the answers a searcher reads before clicking any link.** Google switched AI Overviews on across Australia on 29 October 2024, so these answers now sit above the organic results on Australian searches. AEO sets out your facts and content so those surfaces lift and cite them directly. It covers the answers that appear on, or come from, a search engine; the AI chats belong to GEO, and mixing the two up spends your budget on the wrong surface. Worldwide, AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users by July 2025 ([Google's 2025 AI Overviews reach figures](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/alphabet-earnings-q2-2025/)).

## What AEO Actually Optimises For in Australian Search

**AEO makes a specific fact or passage on your site easy to lift into a direct answer, so Australian buyers read about your business in the answer itself, not only a ranked page beneath it.** Each surface works its own way. A Google AI Overview is a generated summary shown with links to supporting pages; Google states that a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as one of those links, and that no special structured data is required ([Google Search Central, AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). A featured snippet shows content selected from one page, and answer boxes and voice answers vary by feature and assistant. A strong organic ranking does not guarantee that an AI Overview names your business or cites your page.

Three pieces of work, done together, make content answer-ready:

- **Verified facts:** one clear record of what your business is, what it does and where it operates in Australia, so the answer surface has a fact it trusts.
- **Quotable passages:** copy written as short, self-contained answers rather than marketing prose, so one passage answers one question.
- **Structured data:** code that labels your facts for search engines, added where it helps Google read the page, as a supporting practice and not an entry requirement.

| Surface | Parent category | Where the answer appears | Answer format | What gets extracted | Discipline |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google AI Overviews | AI answer surfaces | Above Google's organic results, Australia-wide since 29 October 2024 | AI-generated summary with cited sources | Facts and passages from the pages the summary links to | AEO |
| Featured snippets | AI answer surfaces | At the top of Google's results page | A passage, list or table selected from one page | A clean, self-contained passage | AEO |
| Answer boxes | AI answer surfaces | On Google's results page | A direct answer whose format, source and attribution vary by feature | Varies by feature | AEO |
| Voice search answers | AI answer surfaces | Read aloud by a voice assistant | A spoken answer, varying by assistant | A short passage that answers the question directly | AEO |
| LLM chats (peer surface) | AI answer surfaces | Inside a chat conversation | A generated answer or shortlist | The business's facts, corroborated by independent sources | GEO |

### What is answer engine optimisation?

**Answer engine optimisation is the work of setting out your facts and content so Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers extract and quote them directly.** It differs from traditional SEO because the target is a citation inside the answer, not a ranked link below it. In Ahrefs' Australian database, "answer engine optimization" draws about 200 searches a month and "aeo seo" about 150 (Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, 24 October 2026).

## AEO vs GEO: The Distinction That Actually Matters for Australian Businesses

**AEO and GEO both win AI-driven citations for your business, but they target different surfaces, follow different mechanics and rest on different supporting practices, so keeping them apart keeps your budget on the surface your Australian buyers use.** AEO targets the answers a search engine or voice assistant gives directly. [GEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#geo-generative-engine-optimisation), Generative Engine Optimisation, earns citations and mentions for your business inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, where a buyer asks a question without opening a search engine. [SEO](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#seo-search-engine-optimisation), search engine optimisation, sits underneath both and earns the ranked links in the organic results of Google and Bing.

The difference shows in where the citation sits and how the buyer meets it. An AEO citation sits on a Google results page, beside the links a searcher still clicks, or inside a spoken answer. A GEO citation sits inside a conversational answer, where your business is named in the reply itself rather than in a list of links next to it.

| Discipline | Surfaces | Engines | Where the citation sits | Links shown beside it | Supporting practices |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SEO | Organic results | Google's and Bing's search indexes | A ranked link in the results list | The other ranked results | Crawlable pages, relevant content, credible backlinks |
| AEO | AI Overviews, featured snippets and answer boxes, voice search answers | Google; voice assistants | Inside Google's answer above the results, or in a spoken answer | Traditional links below the answer; none in a spoken answer | Clear facts, quotable passages and relevant structured data as a supporting practice, not an entry requirement |
| GEO | Chat answers and recommendations | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | Inside the conversational answer | Source links, where the engine shows them | Verified facts corroborated across independent sources |

*AEO against its peers in Australian search.*

GEO leads in Aemorph's work, because a chat answer often names a shortlist with no other links beside it. AEO stays an important second surface, and the two share enough technical groundwork that building one strengthens the other.

A United States study by Pew Research Center found that about 18% of the Google searches its US respondents ran in March 2025 produced an AI summary, and 58% of respondents ran at least one such search ([Pew Research Center's 2025 AI summary click study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/)). The study covers US adults only and says nothing about Australian searchers.

| Figure | Value | What it measures | Scope | Date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AI Overviews monthly users | Over 2 billion | Monthly users of Google AI Overviews | More than 200 countries and territories, 40 languages | July 2025 | Google, 23 Jul 2025 |
| Searches with an AI summary | 18% | Share of Google searches that produced an AI summary | Google searches by US adults in the study | March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |
| Users who saw an AI summary | 58% | Share of users who encountered at least one AI summary | US adults in the study | March 2025 | Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025 |

### What is AEO and GEO for an Australian business?

**AEO and GEO are the two halves of AI-visibility work: GEO covers citation and recommendation inside the AI chats, and AEO covers citation inside Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, answer boxes and voice search answers.** Work on one without the other and part of your Australian buyers' research goes uncovered.

## AEO Makes Your Business Facts Clear, Consistent and Easy to Extract

**AEO keeps your facts clear, consistent and easy to extract, so an answer surface has something exact to quote when Australian buyers search.** Each engine answers from what it has learned and retrieved about your business across many sources, and your website is only one of them. In Aemorph's working model, an answer surface works in four steps, a simplification that varies by surface and query:

1. **Identifies** the pages and sources relevant to the query.
2. **Pulls** the passage it needs from a source whose facts are clear and consistent.
3. **Links** or cites the sources behind the answer, where the surface shows them.
4. **Leaves out** businesses its sources describe vaguely or inconsistently, a risk a high organic ranking does not remove.

More pages do not, on their own, earn AI Overview visibility: accurate facts and clear, extractable passages come first. Engineers call a structured record of entities and the facts that link them a knowledge graph. Your [verified record](https://aemorph.com/en-au/glossary/#verified-record), the facts your business supplies and approves, keeps those facts in that checkable form, with the same name, services, locations and figures on every page.

## Australian Search Shows AI Overviews Nationwide, With AI Mode and Bing Alongside

**Australians search mostly on Google, which has shown AI Overviews nationwide since October 2024 and began rolling out AI Mode in October 2025, while Bing holds close to a tenth of search engine market share, so Australian AEO has to hold on more than one answer surface.** Google held 87.9% of search engine market share in Australia in September 2026 and Bing 9.17% ([StatCounter, Australia, September 2026](https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/australia)). Google began rolling out [AI Mode in Australia](https://blog.google/intl/en-au/products/explore-get-answers/ai-mode-in-australia/), in English, on 8 October 2025, and [DataReportal's Digital 2026: Australia](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-australia) counts 26.2 million internet users in Australia, 97.1% of the population, as of October 2025. For that reason Aemorph verifies Australian client sites in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.

## Getting AEO Right in Australia

**Build an approved fact base first, then shape your content around it, so Google extracts your facts by design rather than by chance.** Work through this checklist for each topic you want quoted in Australian search:

1. **List the questions your Australian buyers search.** Note the exact words buyers type or speak into Google for your category, including local spellings and place names.
2. **Record which answer feature each question triggers.** Search each one from Australia and note whether an AI Overview, a featured snippet, an answer box or no answer appears, and which pages it cites.
3. **Confirm each target page is indexed and eligible for a snippet.** Google names both as the conditions for a page to appear as a link in an AI Overview.
4. **Write one approved set of facts.** Keep your business name, services, Australian locations and figures identical on every page.
5. **Answer each question in one self-contained passage.** Open the section with a direct answer of one or two sentences, then add the detail.
6. **Match the format to the question.** Use a numbered list for a process, a table for a comparison and a short passage for a definition, three common featured-snippet formats.
7. **Add relevant structured data as support.** Mark up the page where it helps Google read it; no special structured data is required.
8. **Re-check the same questions every month.** Note which features cite your pages, where an answer states your facts wrongly, and how the pages perform in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Two Australian Aemorph clients show what the checklist aims at: their pages are named as sources inside Google's AI Overviews.

> **Case study · AEO, eyewear and eye care, Australia**
>
> **Google AI Overviews cite Eye Concepts for 226 Australian search terms.**
>
> Those terms carry 63,430 combined monthly searches, including "myopia" (8,200 a month), "eye twitching" (5,100) and "eye infection" (4,300). [Read the Eye Concepts case study](https://aemorph.com/en-au/case-studies/eye-concepts/)

> **Case study · AEO, multi-practice orthodontics, Australia**
>
> **Google AI Overviews cite Smile Team for 223 Australian search terms.**
>
> Those terms carry 22,650 combined monthly searches, including "retainer" (5,500 a month), "dental retainer" (1,000) and "dental wax" (900). [Read the Smile Team case study](https://aemorph.com/en-au/case-studies/smile-team/)

*Source: Ahrefs organic keywords, Australia, June 2026: search terms where the client's page appears as a source in the AI Overview, with keyword dates from 23 May to 30 June 2026. These are Google AI Overview citations, not citations in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity. [How results are measured](https://aemorph.com/en-au/case-studies/#every-case-study-australian-clients-first-records-visits-before-after-and-over-time)*

Two mistakes undo the checklist. The first is dense promotional copy with no clean, quotable passage, which leaves Google's systems little that is exact enough to lift.

The second is treating AEO as a volume problem rather than an accuracy and structure problem. A well-checked, clearly structured page offers precise passages to extract; a large site of loosely worded pages covering the same ground makes the right answer harder to find.

### Is AEO worth doing if I already rank well organically in Australia?

**Yes: AEO is worth doing even with strong Australian rankings, because a place in an AI Overview is a separate visibility opportunity, and a high ranking does not secure it.** In Pew Research Center's 2025 study of US users, a search results page with an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% without one ([Pew Research Center's 2025 AI summary click study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/)). That is US data and draws no conclusion about Australian click rates; in that study, fewer clicks went to the organic results beneath an answer.
